As there isn't a thread for RL yet...

Marwan Koukash, the owner of Salford, has rebranded the club using their old 'Salford Red Devils' name and wants them to become a 'big club', which has ruffled a few feathers in the sport.

He also wants to buy Oldham Roughyeds (and Oldham Athletic FC) with the intention of constructing a new stadium for both clubs in Oldham, and getting Roughyeds into the Super League - which would mean two teams in the same league under the same ownership. Is this allowed and has it happened before in other sports?

It appears that "the old boy" network at BBC Sport is alive and well, as if you access the main BBC sport webpage, Rugby Union is shown as a main heading, whereas Rugby League is not. I speak as a Rugby Union ex-player (fly-half) and current follower, but I do see the unfairness in the showings of the current main headings.

With regard to ground-sharing, Sale Sharks share the new ground near to Barton Airport with Salford City Reds RLFC.

If Koukash did buy both Oldham clubs and got Latics in Championship and Oldham Roughyeds into Super Leagues plus new stadium too then do well for Oldham in general, also Koukash did said that if he buy Oldham Roughyeds then he put it in his wife names to owned Roughyeds but I not sure if Rugby league will allowed him to do this, to me I can't seeing him buying Latics anytime soon but if he allowed to own two Rugby clubs then I can see him buying Oldham Roughyeds sooner as I'm sure Oldham Roughyeds owned have said that they would like welcome Koukash to buy Oldham from them.

    Championship One play offs matches.

London Skolars 44-28 Hemel Stags and sadly Oldham 22-23 Rochdale.

What that mean is Rochdale are in Grand final and Oldham will meet London next Sunday for place in final against Rochdale.

Has there already been an instance in recent years of the Oldham rugby league club told to vacate the stadium of Oldham Athletic, as that code of rugby was causing the pitch to cut up badly to the detriment of the silky smooth football skills of the football club.

True but I sure Koukash wouldn't be spend money to build new stadium for both Latics and Roughyeds if he can build new stadium which can host Latics and Roughyeds matches and have pitch in good condition throughout the whole year.

Further to this matter, as part of a new sponsorship deal, that new jointly-shared stadium will be re-named "The A J Bell Stadium".

    Super League play-offs

    Huddersfield Giants 78...Hull FC 18

Luke Robinson scored four of the thirteen tries scored by the Giants. Such was their first-half domination that the score at half-time was 54-6...

    Oldham Roughyeds 64-8 London Skolars

Nice to see Oldham won that match and it mean that big derby will take place in Championship One play off final next Sunday, Rochdale v Oldham is game that will take place for places in Championship division.

He certainly has not been averse in signing many new players in readiness for the new season's fixtures.

The signing of the Brisbane Bronco's prop forward, Lama Tasi, is the thirteenth new player to be signed.

And it be North West final after Wigan beat Leeds 22-12 on Friday night.

Championship One play offs Final Results

    Rochdale 32-18 Oldham

Sad to see Oldham Roughyeds lost in play off final special when Oldham have been top of Championship One table for most part of season and lost 1st place to Crusaders on last game of season.

Yes, but only top because they'd played more games than their rivals

For those in the stadium before Oldham, a huge cheer to Leigh Miners Rangers and their stunning victory against Wigan St Pats.

Wigan Warriors will find it hard to replace both Pat Richards and Sam Tomkins (world-record Rugby League transfer) next season.

Danny Brough, the 30 year old captain of the Huddersfield Giants, won the Super League "Man of Steel" award. The club had quite a good season in the last campaign, finishing top for the first time in 61 years,

I think you'll find the player in question is Danny Brough, and he has elected to play for (and captain) Scotland in the upcoming World Cup having been overlooked for England, despite having appeared for England previously.
This, coupled with the omission of a certain Eorl Crabtree (Some of the older forum members may be more familiar with the career of his Uncle Shirley (really!), better known as the wrestler, Big Daddy.) from the England squad has led to discussions round these parts of a bias at international level against the club representing the town where the 'Northern Union' was formed...

I made too much of a connection to Scotland and Robert the Bruce........I will amend my posting.

Incidentally, at the same award cermony, Huddersfield Giants took another award as Paul Anderson was voted "Coach of the Year".

Indeed, and now that their chairman has done the decent thing and returned Huddersfield Town AFC's 40% shareholding in the Kirklees Stadium Development Committee, I can at least take some degree of civic pride in the excellent achievements of the 'egg-chasers' this year!

    GRAND FINAL

    Warrington Wolves 16...Wigan Warriors 30

A most remarkable second-half fightback by Wigan saw them recover from a 16-2 defecit to score 28 unanswered points in this win at Old Trafford.

First time anyones ever made the final after coming fourth in the league, first time of course anyones won after coming fourth in the league, first time a team has won when they were losing at half time in the final and should have been the first time a player was sent off in a final :P

Great atmosphere watching the match in the pub.

It was a great match. The first one I have watched in a number of years, as I am usually through at my parents on a Saturday teatime, but it was a fantastic comeback by Wigan.

    England 14...Italy 15

Well, the so-called "friendly warm-up" match planned as something of a stroll against a very low-rated country by England last weekend, just a very short time before the start of the Rugby League World Cup, did not go the way as planned.

In an interesting note, I see that the three Burgess brothers, Sam, George and Thomas have all been named in the 19-man England squad that will face Australia in their opening World Cup fixture.

Ryan Hall scores a first half hat-trick of tries, as England who were 30-0 up at half-time, eased off in the second half.

Good to see that BBC1 actually acknowledged the existence of the game of Rugby League by actually showing this game...

Apparently this game was the first match to be sold out. Good turnout by everyone today.

The way how the organisers have worked out which stadiums will be used has worked perfectly in week 1, opening game in a showpiece stadium (Cardiff) with all the others in proper rugby league grounds (apart from USA v Cook Islands at the Memorial Ground in Bristol). It is just a shame that BBC couldn't show all the matches instead of Premier Sports as the game needs free to air tv coverage outside the challenge cup

Long gone indeed are those Saturday afternoons when Eddie Waring and his trilby brought the viewing of Rugby League matches to "the masses".

England scored 6 tries in this expected victory, but will find New Zealand a much more difficult opponent in the semi-final.

    World Cup Final

    Australia 34...New Zealand 2

Australia showed why they are the current best national side in the world with the best full back in the world, who linked up well to score two of their five tries. The Australian defence was solid and prevented New Zealand from crossing their line.

New Zealand looked lethargic for most of the match and were outplayed in all aspects of the game.

Old Trafford had over 74,000 in to watch this enthralling match.

Following on from the news of the proposed 2015 Super League reduction of teams in that league, the Rugby Football League, looking to the future of the sport immediately before that level, have said that after the 2014 season, the top two divisions will be composed two leagues of 12 teams each.

There is another proposal following on from this, that the existing 24 clubs would then play in three divisions of eight teams each.

That's in the same season - so number of teams promoted / relegated can be anything between 0 and 4.

I went to watch Castleford Tigers v York City Knights in a friendly on Sunday, a 1pm kick off. Given both my local station's and Castleford's poor Sunday service I bussed it from Wakefield as Cas came within the plusbus zone!

The Jungle is one of those grounds that they don't make anymore, terracing on all four sides, plenty of cover, I'm glad I visited it before it disappears. Only my second ever Rugby League game but quite enjoyed it, Castleford running out 62-6 winners.

First half Castleford went up 26-0 ahead within the first half hour thanks to Carney scoring a hat-trick, York gave far too many penalties away and it could have been more. The 28th to 59th minute mark saw only one score as York pulled a try back on 36, Brining breaking through under the posts. Last 21 minutes Castleford ran away with it, 6 converted tries and their class shone through. York left gaps open and one missed pass allowed Carney to pick up and set in Sneyd who had a clear run at the line. 11 tries, 9 conversions giving the 62-6 scoreline. The gulf in class was quite astonishing but then again it is professional v semi professional.

Looking forward to more rugby league over the next few weeks. The joys of Hunslet Hawks v Leeds Rhinos next Sunday I reckon.
