Interesting. Are there any plans to improve line speeds on any of the routes for the HSTs? It strikes me that in many places at least 90mph could be possible with some signalling improvements.
Signal sighting on the various A2I resignalling/doubling schemes has made passive provision for 100mph linespeeds where possible.

That is good news. Hoping to take a trip up the HML in September on an HST instead of a 170. Will be doing the complete circuit.

The latest issue of Rail Today UK has a listing of ScotRail HST diagrams, no idea if they can be relied on though.

It does say there will be 18 unrefurbished sets, with plans for 11 in service by August.

From the 19th August according to the article, there look to be substantially more HSTs on the HML.

Assuming they have 4 refurbs and 11 Classics, yes. Otherwise - no I'd guess at least not fully.
They may have the sets - as it seems they do now - but will the sets be mechanically ready - and will they have enough staff trained and ready to run them? Those last two questions seem to have been the biggest issue according to this forum.

Well that's what it boils down to, it does say planned and thought it was interesting to see what is at least proposed but I think we are all used to taking it as a case of wait and see what happens.

Looks to be 14 departures out of Inverness on the HML from 19th August and 15 arrivals.
Doesn't one of the 15 arrivals head south via Aberdeen at 4:50 in the morning or something crazy like that? And that's why there are only 14 departures southbound on the HML?

0453 Inverness-Edinburgh?

That's down as from 19th August.

Can anybody post a link to the article or post the arrivals and departures that are meant to be HST from Inverness
Thanks

Wow is it really getting so bad that there will now be 18 "classic" sets? That they are going to such lengths says a lot about Scotrail's confidence in Wabtec.

I had thought 10 refurbished sets delivered by the end of the year but given the slowing down of an already very late and slow process, I predict 8-9.

Still haven’t been on an HST in 4 (5?) return journeys from Glasgow to Aberdeen in 2019. The last 3 times my booked seat has clearly been an HST seating allocation (seat numbers don’t exceed 8 in first class on a 170) and this morning’s 0839 GLQ - ABD is decidedly small for an HST ;)

Will see what tomorrow’s return journey brings. I acknowledge that it may just be bad luck on my part as forum experience tends to suggest HSTs are now running when intended, but there are clearly still quite a few substitutions with 170s stepping in.

My understanding is that the situation is still very fluid and although there are diagrams that would ideally be an HST there are either not enough serviceable sets or Crews to guarantee them on every diagram. Hence ScotRail have been announcing on their Twitter feed which diagrams are refurbished sets on a daily basis and sometimes they have announced diagrams that are classic sets. Real-time trains will indicate the diagrams that could be an HST where the timing load indicated is a diesel locomotive hauling 300 tons. But that is not a guarantee that the service will be HST formed.

Aberdeen to Inverurie after doubling is 75mph max - other parts of the route North of Inverurie could go faster (Line Speed Studies have been looked - but nothing implemented)

save me from looking up the Sectional Appendix- is that an increase over what the single track was?

Used to be 70mph max Aberdeen-Elgin and 75 Elgin-Inverness.

The single track was 40 Aberdeen-Kittybrewster; then up to 55, then 65 into Dyce, with 40 on the loop.

Back up to 65 to Pitnedden, then to 70 Inverurie with a few 60 PSRs and a 60 coming into Inverurie iirc and 40 on its loop.

Sorry if this has been posted already, but I picked up a thread on the scot-rail.co.uk forum that indicates the following around the ScotRail HSTs:

1. Wabtec have committed to deliver 1 rake per month for the next 21 months.
2. ScotRail is in discussions with Angel Trains to procure and convert more Mk3 TSOs to strengthen all rakes to 5 coaches.

The delivery timeline probably isn't much of a surprise given that retention tanks are being fitted to the classic sets, but given the conversations I have seen on this thread around the platform lengths at Inverness will it be doable to have all incoming and outgoing services from Inverness as 5-car without lengthening a couple of the platforms?

So ideally in 21 months well have the full fleet.

2. ScotRail is in discussions with Angel Trains to procure and convert more Mk3 TSOs to strengthen all rakes to 5 coaches.

Is that all 26 sets or simply all the Classics? Either way, additional TS vehicles is very welcome as many people have expressed concern that the 2+4s are approaching insufficient capacity.

From the way it was described, the additional trailers would be procured and converted after the completion of the existing order, so it would be the refurbished trains only.

So they'll be running all 2+5, instead of sixteen 2+5 and nine 2+4.

LNER currently operate 2+9 HSTs (soon to become Azumas) to Inverness so their needs also come into this, as do Caledonian Sleeper. Of course there are also long special charter trains to be allowed for as well. Combined with Scotrail shorter HSTs to Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Glasgow the number of trains wanting to use the 4 south facing platforms should be manageable - until two power cars are added onto the revenue earning vehicles!

I've only found one picture of the ends of Platforms 3 and 4; https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/653331 More precise measurements of effective platform lengths, train lengths, signalling distances and timetabling will be crucial if longer trains are to operated .

There's an old thread about Inverness platforms that may be of interest; https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/inverness-mysterious-platform-7.79144/

1A53 bore a striking resemblance to a 170 today, so I guess HA945 had taken the hump with the world at large. Intrigued to see if HA972 wants to meet me tomorrow to claim the prized crown of bigmoose’s first Scotrail HST.

thanks for this. The increase to 75 from these will be most welcome, HSTs will achieve it with ease. I suppose any improvement in journey time will be offset by the new Kintore station stop when it opens.

I'm at the Inverness station quite regularly so if anyone is wanting some additional photos of the current platforms, it's easy to take some to show the current setup.

I didn't get a picture of it as the barriers were active for the platforms but there was an impressive classic HST which had the leading power car in Scotrail livery, two coaches in the FGW livery, one coach in the dark green GWR livery and then the last coach and trailing power car in that default blue livery with the large bike symbol.

save me from looking up the Sectional Appendix- is that an increase over what the single track was?

Effectively - 75mph from Hutcheon St Tunnel all the way to Inverurie (small dip on one line at Kittybrewster) - the single to double connection at Kittyb is at 50mph turnout, the new crossover south of Inverurie is 50mph, the double to single north of Inverurie is a 50mph turnout - the new xover at Dyce for access to Raiths Farn is 25mph. Plus new runround facility at Kittyb to access Waterloo from the south - and yes to get back on topic - it has all been cleared for HST MkIII's
