After looking through the Platform 5 Coaching Stock book and seeing the gaps in the numbering of the Resturant (102xx series), First (11xxx) and Standard Class (12xxx) Mark 3 vehicles, I wondered which of those not listed have been scrapped and which have reached preservation. The most important for me would be the Standard Class coaches if anyone could help :D
I have noticed that some have been converted to HST vehicles and others have been renumbered by DBS/Chiltern.

Thanks, Sam

Most of them have simply been renumbered when converted (say) from 1st class to standard class for example, not many have been scrapped although a few have after accidents etc.

I would recommend a recently published book "British Rail Coaching Stock Volume 1: Mk2, 3 & 4 Coaches" which (quoting from the cover) provides a complete listing of numbers, conversions, renumberings, preservation, departmental, exports and disposals. It is published by Coorlea Publishing. The book is basically a big list which suits me!

Also, for preserved stock, the VCT carriage survey at http://www.cs.vintagecarriagestrust.org/se/search.asp may be of use.

Are these really the only MK3's that have ever been cut up? That's really quite amazing if that's the case.

For nostalgia value, the rather shabby Intercity liveried sleeper at Southall is always a good one!

Yep, Helvellyn’s useful list concurs with my own.

There are absolutely loads of mark 3 sleepers that have made it into preservation as well, acting as either volunteers overnight accommodation on preserved railways, or as camping cars. Ten mark 3 sleepers also went to Denmark in the early nineties – I think that they have all been returned to the UK now, and other than one that has made it into preservation at the Embsay and Bolton Abbey Railway I don’t know what has become of them.

For anyone who dosen't know, TSO 12140 Was the experimental T4 Bogie fitted Mk3 - Same bogie as per the Mk3 DVTs & Class 158s.

Many Mk3 RFMs are also now finding use as Cafe's on Preserved Railways aswell, including one now at Midsummer Norton, and one in use on the Mid Norfolk Railway.

Interesting. Why was she scrapped, rather than just re-bogied? Was this before coaching stock was in such high demand, or was it reduced to a mere shell beforehand?

Not sure why it wasn't re-bogied, but it ended up being used as a warning by Porterbrook to the industry in a case of 'Use Them or Lose Them'. In doing so was then scrapped by mechanical grab at i think Long Marston, and the pictures distributed around to various railway media people.

In fact, 12140 had an interesting life by the looks of it, having also been used as the testbed for the prototype Mk4 bogies aswell.

In fact, the subject of 12140 has come up before on RailUk, in this thread.

Thanks for the comments everyone. Have any Mark 3 TSO or FO coaches made it into preservation then. After reading about DVT 82128 being scrapped at the end of the last year the only others not listed are 82109, 82119 and 82142, 82147 and 82149. What happended to these, I know I heard about a DVT being at Fire College at Moreton-in-Marsh with two Pendolino Cars (ex 390033) and (now) 508212.
Thanks, Sam

Not exactly what you asked for, but for referance its probably worth mentioning various SLEPS that now grace Preserved railways as staff accommodation. And some others where sent to the danish state railways, which have been left rotting in sidings for maybe 10 years now? Unfortunately I can't provide any accurate numbers

Already all covered in my earlier post further up the thread: ;)

The Wikipedia page on Driving Van Trailers has a useful list as a starting point:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Driving_Van_Trailer

82149 is the one at Moreton-in-Marsh and 82119 has been scrapped - In fact I believe that it was the first DVT to be cut up.

Oops :D I dont suppose DRS have some too? I saw a picture on this webiste (http://www.nwrail.org.uk/nw1106d.htm) of a MK3 slep In a BR livery working for a special tour do you know how many are in hat condition, as they could be useful for Scotrails refurbishment?
There is just the one BR blue/grey sleeper - 10588 as pictured there. It used to be Cargo-Ds, and was used to provide staff accomodation on tours. Funnily enough, it IS now owned, outright, by Scotrail and presently resides at Inverness depot where the Caledonian Sleeper stock is maintained.

Thank you, great help :D
The Vintage Carriage Trust is useful but dosen't scrapped members and I believe only one FO is mentioned as being preserved.

Thanks, Sam

It was scrapped on site in 2009.

Inverness had four "off-lease" Sleepers to be used as support for their operational fleet. I believe from memory that at least two went to Glasgow to support overhauls, whilst at least one was broken up on site at Inverness. Porterbrook, as owner, had given Scotrail permission to use and dispose.

Ah, I see...not sure at all but think the one i seen was one of the last two left if not the last one. Very hazy on that though. Thanks for that info:)

10510 went to Glasgow (and then on to Booths), 10515 and 10663 were carted off to Highland Clearance at Muir of Ord for scrapping in 2008, with the last, 10547, being scrapped at Inverness depot in 2009. I've attached a photo of the last of these vehicles (which I took back in 2005).

Any ideas why they scrapped them? They were only built in the mid 80's weren't they? It's strange that they didn't refurbish them and add them to their fleet.

When were they last used?

No use for them - they had been handed back to Porterbrook by ScotRail as surplus a few years earlier (can't remember exactly when...I'd guess around 2001/2002).

Anyone know why 3 virgins and a "one" Mk 3 are dumped at the back of Ilford depot on the Seven Kings side
Is there a plan to refurb them and make the rest of the Norwich sets up to 9 cars . or are they just waiting for a good home
