838/839 made an attempt to stay yesterday as they didn't want to go so had brake problems ... hence the late departure.

This morning ... nothing stored at Hove or Horsham.
I like the idea of the 379's going to GN, which will send the 387's south for additional capacity on Metro. And it does make sense to remove all the DOO equipment the 455's use. But there's the GN issue and there's the 313's to replace too, so whilst the 379's could form a solution to replacing the 455's and 313's on SN by sending 387's south (and potentially using Class 377/5's from SE to help replace the 313's) that'll still leave GN short of a few units so it would be very difficult to reintroduce the remaining peak extras should they be required (I personally don't see them returning).

I'm not sure if I heard this on here or not, but the logic behind using 5 car 377's on Caterham/Beckenham Junction to London Bridge services instead of 8 cars in the long term was the fact that London Overground used 5 car 378's on their routes and managed just fine. The only difference is the 378's have much more standing room than a 5 car 377....

And as you say, yes whilst I for one am sad to see the 455's leave Southern after growing up with them serving the Caterham line, they are approaching 40 years old so they are coming to the end of their life. As I said on Page 1, they've done extremely well to outlive some younger fleets and to survive and continue performing reliably for so long. I just wish they weren't going so suddenly.

I've decided to change the format for the Class 455 status list, doing it in order of unit rather than status/storage location (in a similar format to the SWR Metro Fleet Withdrawal fleet)

Thanks; really helpful! Anyone know if 8511 is visible to the public at SL; or where 8519 might be hiding today?

Sorry no idea on 811.

819 is on the sidings as you pass from Selhurst to East Croydon.

The big inspections shed is there and to the left is 4 smaller sidings by the little Brown Building 819 in on one of these

We are definately getting 12 class 377/5s from SE in september plus 163/164 back (think i got those numbers right.)

I was wondering whether they may attach a 3 car in the peak or run 2x4s peak only? Those trains can get pretty busy in places.

Really, I am a local, and excluding covid, single units during the day aren’t that common. Although I may have just been getting the wrong services.
No I agree. Am local and very rarely have seen a 4 in recent years. When they are they get pretty busy off peak.

Will have mixed feelings about them going. Seats have been allowed to get filthy in recent years but other one I travelled in on Monday was immaculate and otherwise they do a perfectly good job. The nadir was in Connex days but that was true of Networkers and everything else.

My fear is we’ll see a lot of short trains even at peak times when 8 minimum is definitely needed these days, Tue-Thur at least

I believe the 12 x 377/5 to Southern is dependant on whether the DfT allow the 707s across to SE in August. If the 701s are still not ready the cascade might not happen.

Having had a look through @03_179's Part Time Spotter blog, I believe the last services 455838 and 455839 worked in service were:
455838: Last recorded in service 08/03/2022 on diagram SL509 (last passenger service was 2B49 22:41 Epsom Downs to London Victoria paired with 455806)
455839: Last recorded in service 11/03/2022 on diagram SL523 (last passenger service was 2B53 23:07 Epsom Downs to London Victoria paired with 455824)

Platform length issue at East Dulwich means that 8 car Class 455s cannot stop on the Up Line. It’s only taken nearly 40 years to discover they don’t fit!!! It is possible (due to Monday-Friday services at E Dulwich all being booked 8/455) that there may be some alterations to stock diagrams made. Unknown for sure.
They were stopping there again today, saying front 7 coaches only, but seemingly releasing doors on all vehicles.

However wasn't the 8th vehicle locked out to prevent any incident from happening. Most likely the 8th vehicle was locked out of use.

Appreciate it might be too early to know, but is there any gen on which units are going to be used on the Farewell tour? Would be fitting if 455801 was one of the units to be used.

It isn't interesting. It just gives Southern time to get the units to the scrapyard in an orderly manner after they go out of service next Saturday.

It’s certainly unusual for a fleet to leave service en-masse more or less overnight. Normally new units gradually replace the old. Even Sims Newport can’t deal with 40+ units immediately!
