Has anyone heard anything about the introduction of the 16-18 Railcard recently? I heard a while ago it was being trialled.
The RDG is introducing a new railcard just for 16-18 year olds however, that gets them 50% off and has no minimum fare at peak times (unlike the 16-25 one).16 - 18 already has a Railcard as part of the 16-25 or as some still call it, the Young Persons Railcard.

I totally missed that
Might as well just extend child fares to 18.

Totally agree. Presumably the RDG still want to be able to fleece irregular travellers and tourists.
if RPIs accept carrying the railcard as sufficient ID for posession of a child ticket, it's a great idea, for that very reason. I'm definitely in favour of it.On the other hand, could be argued that this acts as a form of ID for older "children", thereby getting around the problem that, since 16/17 year olds are less likely to carry ID then it's difficult to judge whether they should have a child ticket. This therefore would remove both chancers and legitimate travel with a child ticket for older looking "children" (I certainly had a couple of problems at 15, and it would have been grim had child tickets gone up to 18).

No reason why they wouldnt as you will need ID of some form to obtain the railcard
Yes, but a passport would suffice, which I wouldn't expect (or desire) a 16 year old to have to hand whilst travelling.
Not that it should be called 16-25 railcard either as mature students can get it.16 - 18 already has a Railcard as part of the 16-25 or as some still call it, the Young Persons Railcard.
According to the RDG website it's actually a 16-17 Railcard. Not that it should be called 16-18 railcard either as mature students can get it.
I'm 18 in January so am very interested to hear if the same rule that applies to the 16-25, 26-30 etc. will apply here, that is that you can buy this railcard the day before your 18th birthday and use it for the year, until you turn 19.
Ah, that's a shame. If only it was brought in a couple of years sooner! My information leads me to believe it won't, it will expire the day before your 18th birthday no matter when you buy it.
So, if it were named in common with all the other Railcards and their methods of agewise validity, it'd be the 16 RailcardAh, that's a shame. If only it was brought in a couple of years sooner!
Knowing the rail industry it wouldn't surprise meSo, if it were named in common with all the other Railcards and their methods of agewise validity, it'd be the 16 Railcard
Not all TOCs are participating though.
*sigh*Not all TOCs are participating though.
I heard it was more potentially an issue with local governments than TOCs...*sigh*
Once again, a fragmented industry makes a bit of a mess of launching a new product. I wonder if there will have to be another fudge with the sale of the tickets as well...
