A battery fire brought down a South African Airways 747 Combi. In this case the batteries were in the cargo bay disturbed by turbulence
If you mean the Helderberg then it was a suspected battery fire. There are those who hold that the cargo was something other than what was listed on the cargo manifest.

Yes. And much busier than it was in the 1980's too!

Impressed.Something else the driver has to deal with without the guard.

Thanks for the answer.I had an incident just as I ran into Twickenham in the slam door days and the first thing I knew about it was the guard informed me that smoke was coming out the back of the train but with his early information the first thing I did was put the bar down. This helped immensely. It was a dead short on the shoe gear.

Obviously this is different but being able to assess what the problem is in the coach would be a helpful way in deciding how to deal with it.

Thats true, but we will never know. Too much secrecy given the political circumstances at the time although the government have opened up a bit more whatever caused the fire was either destroyed by the fire or still lies with the wreckage still at the crash site.

Talking of these lithium ion batteries, this was totally predictable:

One of Samsung's factories has caught fire after the "exploding" batteries that forced it to recall the Galaxy Note 7 smartphone combusted.

The fire in the Samsung SDI factory, which developed some of the faulty batteries in the Note 7, was caused by a pile of discarded batteries in its waste facility, the local emergency services said.
