I was surprised to discover that the team I support, St Johnstone, once had its own station, Muirton Halt, open on match days only, between 1936 and 1959. Although the line to Inverness runs close to the site of the old ground, Muirton park, I would not have thought it worth building a station for match day use only.

Are there any other football or other sports grounds that had their own stations used on match days?

Here's a link to the fans' forum thread for further information. As it is a football fans forum, there's quite colourful stuff posted (!), for the references go to post 17.

The Amsterdam Arena (Ajax home venue) has a train platform used for some away supporters to avoid them mingling with the locals.

It's used when Ajax play home matches against Feyenoord, FC Utrecht, PSV or ADO Den Haag.

    More details here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halte_Amsterdam_ArenA

Didn't the old Derby County (Baseball) ground have it's own station. Can still see the disused platforms as you cruise into Derby station from Birmingham.

Whilst not originally intended as such, I believe Bordesley is only used when there's a match on at Birmingham City?

Boothferry Park for Hull City FC
I used it many years ago.
The station now abandoned following construction of new football ground

    Ninian Park (in Cardiff)
    and The Hawthorns (West Bromwich)
Were both originally used on match days although now a full daily passenger service has operated to both for many years.

    Watford Stadium
A short lived station on the Croxley Green branch opened in 1982 and closed with the branch in 1996

Ashton Gate for Bristol City FC
and Wadsley Bridge for Sheffield Wednesday
After closure to regular passenger services continued in use for football specials only for many years.

    and finally
    Wembley Stadium
No not the present station but the original station on a loop closed in 1969

    I beg to differ..!
It was built as a "parkway" station to serve the surrounding district near a junction of the M61 which included the then new Bolton FC ground. It has a regular frequent daily service.

The stations listed above were served only on match days..!

Newbury Racecourse, Tattenham Corner and Aintree for horseracing specials, although all 3 see regular services as well

Meadowbank Stadium had a station built for the 1986 Commonwealth Games and (according to Wikipedia) was used for events up until 1998.

Both major Stadia in Dublin are adjacent to Railway lines, although only the Aviva has a station in the immediate vicinity, although Lansdowne Road Station also serves the local area. Drumcondra Station is a few minutes walk from Croke Park, which actually lies between two lines.

Add Kempton Park which only a few years ago gained a regular passenger service.

As a life long Derby fan (now aged 48) as far as I know Rams Line Halt was only used on one occasion for the visit of Forest in 1990. In principle the idea was a very good one but I dare say most Forest fans preferred to head straight to the city centre where they could drink and 'interact' with Derby fans.

At one time it would have easier to ask what football grounds didn't have a railway line within 5 minutes walk.

Never been there on a match day but PSV Eindhoven seems to have a platform that leads directly into the stadium. Presume that is only for away supporters too.

I am trying to think of the closest non football team specific station to a ground i have been to.

Lancaster City is the closest i can think of so far:

False, it was built as a park and ride for the M61 (hence 'Parkway') and to serve the huge Middlebrook complex, which includes the Reebok (or whatever it's called these days).

I remember reading that article one month in TRM, and then again a couple of months later it was republished in the football ground magazine I subscribe to. Unfortunately it was unabridged from the exceptional railway detail it went into, so some poor groundhopper trying to find out about the New Den at Millwall had to read a huge deluge of text about railway junctions in Bermondsey!

Trafford FC play literally a stone's throw away from Chassen Road, was going to go to a match there over Easter but decided against it.

Bescot Stadium for Walsall and arguably Witton for Villa Park

I am not sure it is as close as Lancaster. I left at 16:55 and was on the train at 17:01. There is even a handy back gate straight onto the platform!

I think that Wrexham Exchange had direct access to the Racecourse from the platform now closed- the other platform has been absorbed into Wrexham General.

The old Roker Park football ground in Sunderland had a station between Seaburn station and Wearmouth signal box. It was single platform on the Up line and appears to have closed when Seaburn station opened in 1937

If preserved railways count, Ramsbottom United's ground is a similar distance from Ramsbottom station.

    Can include Wolverton Football ground.
It had Wolverton works on one side of the ground and the WCML on the other side of the ground..!
to Include former Football league grounds-
The old "Den" home of Millwall FC (I think!) had lines on three possibly all four sides.

The "Nest" former home of Crystal Palace FC was opposite Selhurst station. My father used to watch the matches from the station platform for the price of a penny platform ticket . The site of the ground is now occupied by.....Selhurst Depot.

Plus Stratford Racecourse on the line to Honeybourne. I believe there used to be a Nottingham Racecourse station as well, though that was before my time.

Kent league side Beckenham FC is 100m from Eden Park Station and right under the embankment. Maidenhead United FC has one side right against the FGW embankment. The San Siro will soon have a station underneath and Dortmund has a tram terminus on a short branch only operational on match days.
