Does anyone know why 4029 doesn't have the air conditioning box on the roof of the a end unlike the other refurbs

They are no longer being fitted - according to other forums, the drivers don't like them.

4010 has been spotted going round the Coast this morning on way to Hylton Street.

I don't see why they need the Air conditioning its not exactally spain in Newcastle!
Anyway they have window which opens. They do look unsightly coming down the track, I have only been on the refurbs about 6 times now so time will tell on what I think of them!

During hot summer afternoons I've seen myself open the doors to let some air in during rush hour!

Although the voice over is not the best, I think the announcements are quite useful especially if the windows are steamed up!

Announcements are (or will become soon) a legal requirement.

I can see the metro slowly becoming simerlar to the London underground.
New ticket barriers at Monument, train announcments such as door opening and closing on the refurbised units sounding a bit like the S stocks announcements. However It will be good to see these improvments after all we have waited a long time for them!

I'm totally confused as to why four sets aren't being refurbished. The prototypes went through the first major refurb with no issues, "heritage value" is nonsense. There's no reason why they can't continue in service then be preserved when the whole fleet is retired. Say hello to a lower fleet reliability and no chance whatsoever of more frequencies due to the lack of trains.

There is the Nexus view, and the realistic view. The realistic view is that Nexus have spent too much money and are looking to cut some costs. I also have a suspicion that 4001/4002 may not be able to be refurbished for RVAR standards. Will it cause too many problems? Hard to tell at this stage. At the minute there seems to be around 4 cars out of service at any one time, either down at Doncaster or being commissioned, so it is possible to run the current service without 4001/02 and the other two which will not be refurbished. Nexus have said that they will be used on football specials etc, but normally football specials are limited to two St. James - Longbenton runs and that's about it.

Main reason why the four sets ain't being refurbished is that the cost of the refurbishment them selves, I was being told that when they went down to wabtec I think it is they found a lot more problems than they had anticipated therefore the price went up.

The two units (01+02) still retain a lot of the older features and wouldn't take much to put them back into the way they used to be (Doubt it would happen with cost and that.) But if these units don't get refurbished then if you think about it the life expectancy of those two trains have not been extended and would have to retire before the rest.

At the moment they are actual doing well considering a few of the trains are down Doncaster and a few are still getting sorted out.

Also noticed that 22 came back w/o a aircon box.

Interesting result from the 2011 Census...

Data reveals that after London, North Tyneside ranked highest for travel to work by “underground, metro, light rail or tram” (ranked 31st of 348 Local Authority Districts) followed by South Tyneside (ranked 32nd of 348).

Newcastle ranked 40th with Gateshead 41st and Sunderland at 49th.

Surprisingly, this means that all 5 LADs in Tyne and Wear rank higher than Nottingham (54th), Manchester (59th) and Liverpool (78th).

Not sure why that's surprising. The North East still has one of the lowest car ownership figures.

Might have the lowest carownership overall but there is still often long traffic jams at peak times. Really the North east is quite compact to the likes of other citys so in my opinion there is not much need for a car. We do have frequent buses, metro's.

From a source - 4075 has returned from Doncaster and 4079 has gone down. Turn around is getting quicker.

Also been announced that more than £100m funding has been agreed today for the next stage of the modernisation project.

Really hope they put 4079 through the lathe or give it some new tyres when it gets back, as when I was on it on Wednesday the noise and vibrations were horrendous!

last time i were on 4010 the brakes were very grindy and felt like it was not going to slow down. I am pleased this £100 million funding has been agreed! Will this speed up the turnaround for refurbishing cars?

Can confirm that being the case. With 4089 back also, perhaps another car has went down, have not seen 4054 for a while so this might of went down to Doncaster whilst 4089 has came back to Tyneside.

Interesting you say the turn around is getting quicker, it still took 2 months for 4075 to get refurbished and Nexus/DB Regio was aiming for the refurbishments of each car to take 3-4 weeks, so how they'll get 86 cars refurbished by Dec 2015 I will never know!

Some observations to note within the fleet:

    * 4087 could well be returning to service shortly, CoachAlex posted a video on Youtube of 4087 being shunted by a battery loco from the paint shop and then into the wheel shop without the train doors attached! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MaCl3OEbXcg

    * 4051 has had partial repaints on both the drivers doors it seems, makes sence why I had not seen it on the system for a while before last week.

    * 4011 has got its A front end repainted and it would appears 4034 has also had it front end repainted too which is surprising considering they are likely to be refurbished in the near future.

Has anyone got any updates on 4052? Its been exactly a month since that incident between Gosforth and Longbenton and I have not seen it back out on the system since then.

4087 will not be back in service soon from what I hear - no idea where Coach Alex gets his info from but as usual it is wide of the mark. 4054 is still up here. 89 has been out and about over the past few days.

I'll have a look at 51 when I see it next, but repainting the fronts and drivers doors isn't too hard a job, plus makes the fleet look a lot better.

No idea about 52, still at the depot I presume.

With the extra funding does that mean more cars can be refurbished, i heard rumours that 4003 would not be refurbished. I guess that 4001 and 4002 will not be refurbished. However perhaps the execption of 4001 why can't 4002 be refurbished? its pathetic how just to please a small minority that 4001 can't be refurbished, 4001 is over 35 years old? It is defiantly a lot older than the production fleet.

4001 and 4002 were built in 1975; the production fleet were built 1978 to 1981.

Nexus have said that 4001/02 will not be refurbished. As for the other two, it is anyone's guess.

To be fair, I was suggesting it could be back into service soon but obviously I have no idea how much work still needs to be done to it.

And nope, repainting front ends/drivers doors is not a hard or long lasting job at all. It was just a general observation, bringing back memories of that now long dead MSN group of the Tyne & Wear Metro where enthusiasts recorded any observations they see on the system.

4001 is not being refurbished because some enthusiasts were rightly or wrongly complaining about it, unfortunately its down to cost. I'm also disappointed they are not being refurbished as I wanted too see if the prototypes would have slight minor differences to the rest of the fleet after refurbishment but won't be able to see that now.

Sorry, the previous posts I did not mean to put into a scornful tone, however what gets my goat is when Coach Alex spouts apparent 'knowledge' on the internet, which certain sections of NE spotter veg then take as gospel. Then those rumours start going round, which doesn't help anyone. For example a recent one I've seen suggests that St. James used to have three platforms, and now apparently one of them is blocked off. Total bull. The reason he said that was due to the fact that there are three information screens at concourse level. Plus I already have my views on him from what he has claimed staff have done to him.

I saw 51 yesterday but forgot to have a look at the doors - will see if it is out and about tomorrow. I know there are quite a few cars with bad fronts, 54 is one of the worst but that is probably because the B end is leading, and has been for some time.

Part of the line was closed today for engineering work, between Kingston Park and Airport. Only platform 2 was being used at Kingston Park (strange to see Kingston Park showing on the displays - 1st time I've seen that).

Well on the link I posted, he thought 4087 was "fire damaged"(I corrected him on that one) where infact it was flood damaged last summer but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt as he thought it was that metrocar which was involved in the incident last month whereas it was 4052 which had that "small fire" if you can call it that.

Always wondered why St James has 3 platform indicators and I have seen the reason being given before but I can't find it atm, all I know is that the platform lengths at St James' are longer than other stations because of the original plans to have 3 cars paired together but obviously this never happened.

I remember one morning where there was disruption and some Airport trains terminated at Kingston Park and I did see Kingston Park on the platform indicators and the train indicators, very rare sight indeed. Must admit, its good too see Nexus has taken the feedback on board on when there is engineering works, make sure(if possible) to put the right destinations up to save from potential confusion.

The main reason that St James has 3 platform indicators is to show the next train that will depart - the two outer ones will show "Next train for the Coast" or "Next train terminates here" when both platforms will be in use, e.g. on Xmas specials or football. It should be happening this Thursday with the match. The middle one is then used for generic info (eng. work, Don't board after the warning tone etc).

Both platforms can have permissive working, but that is very rarely done.

I'm struggling to keep up with what cars are in Doncaster now with the turnaround gladly getting quicker but I think the 4 cars down atm are 4076, 4033, 4010 and 4079. Glad to hear 79 has finally gone down as it was looking a bit of a state!

Doesnt sound like we'll be seeing 87 and 52 again for a while either, and I'm pretty sure its going on for about 6 or 7 months since 4087 was last on the system!

That's the same numbers as I have for what are down at Doncaster, with 4075 back at the depot undergoing commissioning.
