Ha ha. Cheers for the tip, there isn't one in Liverpool alas. Mind you the one on Edge Lane was awful.
Odeon do something similar.

The Producers (1968) - Perhaps not the best of Mel Brooks' films but it's a must watch just for the musical number "Springtime for Hitler" 7.0/10

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets 2h 17mins
Sci-Fi by Luc Besson.
Think Fifth Element but ramped up in terms of colour, effects, CGI etc.
I rather enjoyed it and so did the kids. There is almost zero story and is more of a generic chase film where the protagonists run through a series of sets more elaborate than the previous. Cara Delevingne totally stole the show and very much surprised me with her acting ability.
The whole film looks gorgeous. The denizens of Alpha and this imagined universe are pretty flawless. You can really see where the $177m went. It will never make this budget back because the critics have typically panned it. If you like the genre then you will like it. It's not serious in any way and the story is thin and fragmented in places. You can almost see the script edits on the screen. I think they missed a potentially good story here.
This is based on a comic so you can understand why the look is more important than the story.
If this movie was a car, it would be a concept car.
Ignore any critic reviews and drag the kids to see it. My Daughter didn't want to go see it but enjoyed it and came out smiling.
I don't understand why it was called Valerian. Cara Delvigne's character was clearly the star. I enjoyed it - I wouldn't call it good, it's a bit Star Wars in its scifi for my taste, but it was a good diversion for a few hours.
I agree with it being 'enjoyable' but certainly not 'good' Sci-Fi is very much like this throughout the entire genre.
As to why its called 'Valerian' It's because its based on a French Comic strip where Valerian is the main character. Laureline is his sidekick.
On a side note. The entire Star Wars series is the same story repeated over and over :/ Rogue One was basically a New Hope. I'm dreading the next one as that looks to much like Return of the Jedi already.
Blade Runner: The Final Cut
This is Ridley Scott's preferred version, the film he wanted to make in the first place and the only version where he had complete artistic control.
It's completely restored from the original negative, and put through a new director approved transfer, with 35mm footage scanned at 4K or 6K resolution depending on which type of Panavision camera filmed the scene, and 65mm elements scanned at 8K resolution, and given a completely new 5.1 mix taken from the original track elements but completely restored and put through the latest audio standards.
It looks bloody great, even on my ten-year old telly.
Just saw Atomic Blonde. I rate it 2/5 for "meh". There's some impressive aspects, but it all feels up its own arse trying to be twisty.
I was just made to go and see this with a friend, much agreed, it was pretty naff.
Deadpool - I finally got around to seeing this but I have mixed feelings about it. I loved the wisecracking Deadpool himself but the film is a bit of a mess. Perhaps it's because I don't know the Deadpool/X Men background but I'd have liked more backstory especially that of the villains as I didn't really get what they were all about. Favourite line - "I've only got twelve bullets so you'll have to share." 6.5/10
Mulholland Drive - I decided it was time to watch this again. Widely regarded as David Lynch's masterpiece it's very difficult to describe, it's weird, enigmatic, haunting, mysterious with captivating visuals, Lynch's typically effective use of music and lots of detail which I hadn't noticed the first couple of times I watched it. I confess I don't fully understand it but I think I prefer it that way. This is one film to which I'm tempted to give a perfect score but just in case something better comes along between now and the heat death of the Universe I'll give it a mere 9.9/10.
Silent Running - Classic hippy sci-fi, better than 2001 in my opinion. I particularly like the drones Huey, Dewey and Louie, although they don't say a word they have as much character as R2D2, C3P0 or Marvin the Paranoid Android and almost steal the show. 7.0/10
Looking for film recommendations as I tend to steer clear of the usual box office smashing kiddy cartoons or marvel explodathons.
I'm looking for something that's either incredibly gritty or realistic, preferably British although I can live with anything American. Something preferably politically or current affairs based or something that makes a good sociological statement. Is Dunkirk any good or can it be too nostalgic?
Or I'm looking for something that's downright wierd or screwed up, not in a gratuitous sort of way, like Deadpool, but more in a Clockwork Orange or Pink Floyd The Wall kinda way.
Am I the only one who thinks most super hero films are just cheesy, surely there'll be the anachronistic cliche's of our time.

I went to see 'It' yesterday afternoon, great film. Story really well done (well it would be, it's Stephen King!), the effects were great, quite dark but also funny in places. Would rate it 8/10
I just saw Wind River.
For once Jeremy Renner is not a secret agent, but he's still in that vein. Elizabeth Olsen does well as an FBI agent somewhat out of her depth in a tribal land case. The scene wherein the crime happens was pretty damn brutal, though a bit confusing at first.
My one complaint is that at the end they slapped up a "no statistics are collected on the number of missing native american women" over the final shot. I don't object to the information, though it felt somewhat inserted as an after-thought, but over what I thought was a very effective last shot it rather got in the way. A post-scene information card would have worked better.
Overall 4/5 - Very Good.
