Why would anyone kill bees or spiders? There's no need at all, they do no harm, and in fact help us! Anyone who does that is just stupid.
I kill flies & wasps without hesitation though.
If you don't like flies, then it's daft to kill spiders isn't it?!
Well, I suffer arachnophobia and therefore I cannot abide the sight of a spider, big or small. When I see them I start to get the shakes and just move as far from it as possible.
I don't know what types of spiders you get in the UK but I can tell you that the spiders I have had nasty experiences with are either poisonous, massive or both.
Living in a semi-rural area and on land that has many trees etc always brings them out, especially in the warmer months of the year. The most common ones that you get are
Huntsman spiders which you find everywhere, as a child getting into a car and finding one of these spiders, often as big as CD's sometimes even bigger always scared me, even now if I am driving along and one crawls across the windshield, inside or out, I'll always panic and try to get out and away from the car, even if it means stopping on the side of 3 lane freeway.
Now days before the warmer weather sets in I use vast amounts of pesticides to build a shield around the car, literally all over the car inside and out to prevent spiders from going anywhere near it. I also do the same around the widows of my room and the door as well, which works as I have had no problems since I started to do that.
But they are the ones you see the most, and the ones I hate most too. Another one that is much more common and you see almost all year round are
Daddy long-legsspiders, they don't bother me too much and if there is one in my room then I might not be too concerned as they are discrete and don't cause distress to me if I see one.
Two that I sometimes used to see a fair bit around the house but very rarely now days are
Black House Spiders and
White tail spiders these ones give me creeps and in all cases when they are seen they are killed as their bites are nasty.
Ones that I have had encounters with, but don't recall seeing at home are
Redback spiders which are one of the most dangerous in Australia and coming across one is something I do not wish to encounter. Another are various types of trap door spiders, which a big black fury things and various other kinds:
Australian Spiders.
I know someone who has got an electric fly swat. Nasty thing!
A bug light is much more effective. It's quite common for people to have one or two in out door entertaining areas. In summer when you get thousands of bugs about, when a light is on its amusing to hear the bug light make zapping sounds several times a minute from all the bugs.
When I was a Scout, I went on a 'Desert Storm' camp to Ayers Rock in the Northern Territory and we chartered this
Merpati Airlines aircraft and when we got off the plane in Alice Springs OMG the flies!!! There were so many that you had to wear a fly net because they were everywhere!
We camped at this road house sort of half way between Ayers Rock and the Stuart HWY called
Curtain Springs and I remember sitting at this table out doors and we killed literally hundreds of them with an empty coke bottle. Never in my life have I ever experienced so many flies.
