It's that time of year again and with the experts saying that there are to be more crane flies about (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/8273960.stm) what do you think about killing spiders, flies, wasps, bugs and other nasties?

I just tried to shoo a cranefly out but it refused to budge so I squashed it up in a tissue. Saw a massive spider earlier but missed it - it's in the kitchen somewhere and I'm after it.

I'm not very happy about it, but if they're indoors or they're bothering me (eg: wasps) then they have to go as far as I'm concerned!

I kill them only if I have to (eg. Wasps etc) normally I just leave them alone unless tey are "bugging" me, and even then I normally put them outside.

Usually open a window first and if it is smart enough to fly out then it lives. If it stays and annoys me then, traa

I kill flies if they're not smart enough to go back out the way they came, and I kill spiders up to the size of a 10p. Any bigger than that and I'm shouting for someone to come quick and get rid of it for me! Blargh hate them.

Personally, I have a very strong love of many small critters (Spiders, Bees and Wasps especially) and consequently I can only bring myself to kill them where a death of mercy is appropriate, IE: If a Wasp has suffered a fatal injury and is writhing around in pain. :)

When it comes to "debugging", I normally use a coffee jar or similar container and a piece of paper to humanely capture them, then release them in the back garden. As it is though, I'm so comfortable with most creatures (Including Wasps and Hornets) that I only find myself needing to "debug" when a critter insists on getting under my feet. <D

Hate the lot of them, will happily kill them if I know I can do it without getting stung or whatever.

My perfect way to do it would be to round them all up and chuck them in a nuclear flask and pour in some nuclear waste...<D<D<D

I leave Spiders. I leave Bees. Wasps have to go (either out or get squashed) because unlike bees they will just try to sting you for the sake of it. Flies which are annoying and useless also have to go. That said, I give anything a chance by opening the Window and trying to shoo it out. If it doesn't get the hint then it gets dealt with.

Why would anyone kill bees or spiders? There's no need at all, they do no harm, and in fact help us! Anyone who does that is just stupid.

I kill flies & wasps without hesitation though.

If you don't like flies, then it's daft to kill spiders isn't it?!

Anyone had problems with midges while bashing 37s on the WHL? I recall one time being invaded at Rannoch and they were attracted to the light in the vestibule. At least they all went to the same place so it was easier to get rid of them. The guard had some sort of electric (?) tennis racket shaped thing to swat them with.

I usually try and shoo them out of my house,

I only kill the ones who start on me,
like the one that fell onto my head
or the one that fell onto my lap and crawled down my leg..

Yep I agree with that. And they mind their own business unlike wasps! I swear every time a wasp sees me it goes 'right, I'm gonna get this geezer' and actually follows me and tries to get me. Worse of all, if you squash a wasp near to its nest, it releases a pheromone so all his buddies know to come and get you

Are you sure it wasn't his dispatch bat?

Well, I suffer arachnophobia and therefore I cannot abide the sight of a spider, big or small. When I see them I start to get the shakes and just move as far from it as possible.

I don't know what types of spiders you get in the UK but I can tell you that the spiders I have had nasty experiences with are either poisonous, massive or both.

Living in a semi-rural area and on land that has many trees etc always brings them out, especially in the warmer months of the year. The most common ones that you get are Huntsman spiders which you find everywhere, as a child getting into a car and finding one of these spiders, often as big as CD's sometimes even bigger always scared me, even now if I am driving along and one crawls across the windshield, inside or out, I'll always panic and try to get out and away from the car, even if it means stopping on the side of 3 lane freeway.

Now days before the warmer weather sets in I use vast amounts of pesticides to build a shield around the car, literally all over the car inside and out to prevent spiders from going anywhere near it. I also do the same around the widows of my room and the door as well, which works as I have had no problems since I started to do that.

But they are the ones you see the most, and the ones I hate most too. Another one that is much more common and you see almost all year round are Daddy long-legsspiders, they don't bother me too much and if there is one in my room then I might not be too concerned as they are discrete and don't cause distress to me if I see one.

Two that I sometimes used to see a fair bit around the house but very rarely now days are Black House Spiders and White tail spiders these ones give me creeps and in all cases when they are seen they are killed as their bites are nasty.

Ones that I have had encounters with, but don't recall seeing at home are Redback spiders which are one of the most dangerous in Australia and coming across one is something I do not wish to encounter. Another are various types of trap door spiders, which a big black fury things and various other kinds: Australian Spiders.

I know someone who has got an electric fly swat. Nasty thing!
A bug light is much more effective. It's quite common for people to have one or two in out door entertaining areas. In summer when you get thousands of bugs about, when a light is on its amusing to hear the bug light make zapping sounds several times a minute from all the bugs.

When I was a Scout, I went on a 'Desert Storm' camp to Ayers Rock in the Northern Territory and we chartered this Merpati Airlines aircraft and when we got off the plane in Alice Springs OMG the flies!!! There were so many that you had to wear a fly net because they were everywhere!

We camped at this road house sort of half way between Ayers Rock and the Stuart HWY called Curtain Springs and I remember sitting at this table out doors and we killed literally hundreds of them with an empty coke bottle. Never in my life have I ever experienced so many flies.

I kill anything that I think is scary or is going to harm me.

I do kill spiders (rarely though) but if I think I can help them I let them go; but with wasps I kill them them straight away as they are likely going to sting.

But worst of all I hate craneflys they always come in september and always get killed by me in september I hate the things, all I could recomend to anyone who want's to kill craneflys straight away is buy them little paper bang's which kids use blow's the thing's up sraight away and no mess!.

There are a couple of biting spiders in the UK (Woodlouse Eating is one I know of) but by and large UK spiders are harmless.

I'm not keen, but it is a case of taking outside rather then killing :)

Same here too. Unless it's at night, in which case opening a window can just let more in - consequently, I tend to kill them then (especially if it's really late, and they're disturbing my rest!).

No. They've never done me any harm, and I have no reason to harm them. I usually help them leave the house by way of a newspaper or kitchen towel, though.

I absolutley hate spiders. So much that I wnt even click the links in Aussie-Rail's post incase there are pictures. I will get someone else to kill them. Like in one of the world record books, on the inside cover there was a tarantula, I tried to turn that page over with the one before so I didnt need to look

I will try and get it out of the house, unless its a large spider in which case a large book is dropped on it.

I think I know the one that ye are referring to, and IMO she's one of the sweetest little spiders I've ever had the pleasure to see!

Just to check that we're discussing the same one though, ye might want to get someone else to compare it with This image (Caution: Shows one tiny little spider) :)

...unless its a large spider in which case a large book is dropped on it.
Why...Whatever harm did she do to ye?   <( <( <(

Very glad to see that I'm not the only one around here who's happy to let Spiders stay alive! :)

Though mind ye, I share my flat with at least 15 European House, plus about 20 Woodlands, a few Funnel-Webs and maybe the odd Crane Fly (Which - Strictly speaking - Is an insect, though often mistaken for an Arachnid) or two...And I manage to get along with them all very well, to the point where each seems to understand where the other sets foot (I.E: I use the floor, they use the walls) and avoids using that surface! 8)

I'm starting to get the distinct impression that I'm the only one on the forum who actually cares for Spiders though... <D

my personal standpoint is this:
spiders: live
flies: live (get shooed out)
bees: live (help them out)
wasps: hit them with a newspaper till unconscious, pull off a couple of legs (I know its cruel but its the only way to get rid of them) then chuck them out the window hoping that they will regain conciousness, go back to the nest and tell all the other wasps to leave me alone.
