SWR Repaints and Refurbishments

There are a lot of messages in this thread so I find it difficult to pick out 'external repaint' messages from other repaint/refurbishment ones. Please could someone point me to the right message to find out, or briefly describe, what the different liveries variations are? Thanks!

59CosG95 created a list of the 159 livery variations and the ones in SWR livery in post #2285, so that will probably help.

Basically Mark 1 had stripes on the grey and blue areas, Mark 2 had stripes just on the blue areas and Mark 3 has no stripes. 444040 and 450111 have the first version.

I'm quite sure they are. I've noticed that the refurb units seem to have thicker carpet thresholds than the unrefurbished ones, and the carpet does look new IMO.

No, not yet, but the full refurbishment for SWRs DMUs is due to start sometime in 2020.

My guess is that they will be renumbered, the 450/5 work will start in about a month so we'll see...

Yes, it has kept it's 4505xx number, but I think it was just done as a trial for the 450/5 refurbishment as it was the only one done at the time. The 450/5 refurb will get into full swing in about a month, and then renumbering might start.

That’s going to cause so many arguments about selfish cyclists etc... why would they do that?!

Because the government has this polarised idea that cyclists will cycle to the station, leave their bike then pick up another bike at the other end of their train journey. Gone are the days you could pack 20+ bikes in a Mk1.

In a lot of cases this doesn’t happen. it’s a failing of the franchise system that the Desiro refurbishment program had to include this provision on the basis of seat capacity - very London centric.

Thankfully the refurbishment program has so far ignore this change although maybe we are now seeing it in action.

Tip up seats is a bit better than the planned 4 seats with table at least, it still allows the area to be used flexibly. You see people trying to store luggage and buggies in the current cycle storage area, which is not very easy.
