well, somewhere between a hostel and a Guest House really, but when its entirely booked up by Network Rail staff (as hapened last year), then it effectively becomes just another part of the railway, so you COULD argue that even that building isn't there!
Bridge of Orchy has a hostel on the island platform

Prestwick International Airport station has already taken that honour in Scotland I believe, but you are correct that that will be the first such case in England.

Aren't the three Heathrow Express stations at the airport end managed by BAA?

Yes, they are. My bad. SIA would still be the first to not actually be *in* the airport though; it is only adjacent. Similarly, it isn't underground, whereas the three LHR stations are.

Dalston Kingsland must hold a record for the longest gap between a station closing and then reopening on precisely the same site which was 118 years. Even the original station buildings were demolished in the early 1980s to build the new ticket office.
Originally closed 1865 reopened 1983

Stockton was definitely in Co Durham. I suspect the Tees was the boundary between Durham and the North Riding at this point. However, although Thornaby is postally Stockton on Tees (TS17), it is south of the Tees, so I'm not sure which it would have been.

Broadly speaking of the boroughs that made up Cleveland, Hartlepool and Stockton were formally Co Durham, and Middlesbrough and Langbaurgh were the North Riding. Obviously this is not 100% correct because Yarm was/is part of the borough/unitary authority of Stockton on Tees, but was very much North Riding before 1974.

South of the Tees + Yorkshire, North - County Durham.

See Croft on Tees/Hurworth Place. (Croft Spa station was in Hurworth Place when it closed and Croft when it was built!)

High Rocks (on the Spa Valley line) - possibly the only station where public access to the platform is only allowed while a train is present in the platform.

Hmm.. in a very different part of the UK, but the last time I was in Northern Ireland (about 5 years ago), that applied at the terminus in Londonderry/Derry too.

And access to a couple of the platforms at Wembley Central (those served by Southern) is limited to the period immediately before and after a train is due to call or calls: they are locked up the rest of the time.

(Actually, that probably qualified Wembley Central as unique in its own way)

This is also the case at Cornbrook on the Manchester Metrolink, and apparantly at Dovey Junction

I think Maunlla Jn in Western RoI is an interchange for the lines from Dublin-Sligo/Westport only, and has no public access otherwise...

Wikpedia says not... Cornbrook was orginally, but there is now access to the station.

Dovey Junction also does have pedestrian access, but no road for 3/4 mile.

Manchester Piccadilly, only station with trains to wales in opposite directions?

Shrewsbury has trains to Wales in 3 to 5 directions. :p

Cardiff via Hereford
Welshpool (could be argued this is a shared direction out of Shrewsbury station with the Cardiff trains, branching off at Sutton Bridge)
Wrexham
WAG to Holyhead via Crewe

..and a fifth one sort of: HOWL via Craven Arms (though shared direction out of Shrewsbury itself with the Cardiff trains)

Yes Cornbrook does very much have access now from the ground.

And Dovey Junction is connected to civilization by a tiny station path... it is rather isolated though!

Is Shrewsbury the only station outside London with platforms stretching across a significant river?

London, Surrey... bit of a blur round here...
London Bridge is the only London Underground station with 'London' in its name.

(If, that is, you seperate NR and LU stations; platform signage at, for instance, Paddington have 'London Paddington' on its NR platforms, the LU platforms have simply 'Paddington')

Ok-- two stations but unless you know different...
Waterloo East and New Cross are the only two stations where the platforms are not numbered but only use letters in both cases platform A, B, C and D.

Suggest Portsmouth Harbour and Ryde Pier Head as the entire stations are on piers above water.

St Pancras International has a mixture of numbered and lettered platforms, the high level (EMT, Eurostar and Southeastern) platforms being numbered 1-13 and the low level (FCC) platforms being lettered A and B

Farringdon.
Where the First Capital Connect (Thameslink) passenger train changes its electricity pick up whilst standing in the station. Going north it raises its shoes off the third rail and raises the pantograph for the overhead wires. Going south it does the reverse.
Trains on the West London Line do similiar but on the move between stations.

How about Stourbridge Town for (a) end of the shortest branch line in the UK and (b) only station with a direct service to just one other station.

Also does Liverpool Lime Street have the most TOCs serving it: EMT, TPE, ATW, LM, VR, MR, Northern?
