DHELM: Why are UK railways so bad?

I think Professor Helm could do with getting his article peer reviewed by one of his Engineering colleagues for a start. He lost credibility with me when he started talking about using drones to identify where trains are to enable them to be safely signalled.

    TfW ‘Active Travel’ Class 153s

If you read the dispensation request it says that the livery will only be applied to the Active Travel units themselves so that they are immediately identifable to both passengers and staff, in part to stop them inadvertently being sent out alone.

WCRC loses judicial review in High Court

So a  bit of laxness is ok then, and you're OK with some major injuries rather than actual death? It's not mollycoddling people, it's providing an expected standard of safety on a public transport system. WCRC had an exemption to the rules based on what was a pragmatic arrangement. They then...

Grand Central 180 - Three Days Parked at Eaglescliffe. Marooned?

That headcode can't be a coincidence!

Varamis Rail Given Operators Licence from ORR

10 and 11 at LST have direct access from the platforms onto the old Cab Road, so would be ideal.

GBRF confirms conversion of Class 56s to Class 69s

Actually- just realised that's no use to you! The book didn't differentiate between Red Stripe and normal back then. On checking the livery codes, F = Railfreight, G = Sector Grey and R = Large Logo Blue. I think the later books split them but not in 89... sorry!

    London Underground - CSA1 & CSA2 (2022 & 2023 intake)

Would the answer to this not depend upon whether they are entering or leaving the station?

Is railway run for engineers or passengers, and who should advise disruption

It doesn't work like this, the contractors don't just decide to rock up and close anything. A requirement for a compound will have been established and Network Rail, the station operator and the car park operator will have all negotiated as to the best way (or least worst way) to facilitate a...

    Trying to find B5 (S) & B6 bogie drawings

Might be worth a look at the Southern Electric Group. They have all kinds of useful information. Link to Southern Electric Group modelling section

    PTS Course Dress Code???

You will need full high viz PPE for the practical element of the course, including gloves, glasses, hard hat and boots, as you will be taken lineside on the operational railway. Check your joining instructions carefully as you are normally expected to bring your own kit, unless they specifically...

    PTS Sub-Sponsor

Yes. Normally if you are working through agencies they will act as a secondary sponsor for that work. You would need to comply with the 12 hour rule and 13 in 14 day rule for shifts with both sets of employers. It's worth being honest at the beginning, if you suffered an injury on site with...

Trivia: Stations with canopies supported between running lines

I have been visiting Crewe a lot recently for work, and the canopy there is supported from columns located in the 6-foots between the platform lines and the fast lines on both Platforms 5 and 6. I know that this was a feature of some LNWR stations, but I am struggling to think of any other...

GWR Class 230 Information, Movements & Discussion.

Isn't this exactly what happened with GWRs 769s? ASLEF wanted mods to the cabs over and above the Northern and TfW spec if I recall correctly. Obviously made moot by the units withdrawal from service completely.

    Merseyrail Class 777 introduction updates

Indeed, it should have been 48 weeks. As you say, not as bad but still in the realms of "small" I would say, especially when considering that it doesn't take into account *any* other use of the system.
