As with the demise of the coal industry, the damage was started by the previous goverment:

I remember it was horrible stuff anyway - we got 1/3 pint bottles either frozen solid after being left outside or luke-warm after being put near the radiators to defrost!

No semi-skimmed in those days, when it froze, you got a "plug" of frozen cream pushing the top off the bottle.

It was having to drink that milk that put me off the stuff for life!

Can't do that. We all have to stay to ensure that the posho Toryboys and rednecks don't have England all for themselves. Anyway it's our country as much as theirs.
And, lest we forget, theirs as much as ours

Who remembers right wing wingnuts shouting "Get back to Russia" at CND marchers? Because of course Russia is EXACTLY the sort of place someone who is anti-nuclear would live.....
I was at University with a chap - the very image of a "posho Toryboy" - who regularly received parcels from Moscow that he claimed were his instructions for infiltrating as many organisations as he could. I last saw him at Brixton tube station, after a local gig, handing out tickets and maps to get to Brick Lane (along with broom handles!) where the riots were kicking off (Late 1978, before Thatcher, but the "civil unrest" was anti-fascist so we can discount that). Although I have no doubt most on the CND marches were genuinely committed, I have no doubts there were agents provocateurs involved.

Or, alternatively:
That's one of the great things about Left wing economics. You don't really have to think about society can be improved; you just 'leave it to the state'. It means that fundamentally stooopid people can feel clever saying something political but not challenging ;)
There are fundamentally stupid people in most places;)

The tune has been playing in my head since last night and I cannot seem to get rid of it.

Was that the song by the Munchkins about the Wicked Witch of the East being killed very early on in the film. The Wicked Witch of the West was still there for most of the film with her Winged Monkeys to cause havoc.

If Margaret Thatcher was the equivalent of the Wicked Witch of the East, which would be the female politician in the post-Thatcher period to whom the part of the Wicked Witch of the West would refer to ?

This has to be the best DM headline ever.

I especially like how they manage to combine the phrase "special needs" and "Miliband" in the same bullet point"

Interesting number of comments though

It's headlines that like which make me realise the Press doesn't recognise the responsibilities that come with being free

Correct - the Mirror also starred today with some gibber about yesterday's love-in at Westminster costing £2m. Somehow I doubt that, but what the hell, print it anyway!

Speaking of hypocrisy here is an article comparing Daily Mail headlines from Thatcher's death and Bin Laden's regarding celebrating the death of a person. It's probably a left-leaning source so please take your customary pinch of salt

500 Posts in three days is this an RailUK Forums record ?

Whoops who can't count 4 days !!

Not sure, definitely one of the fastest since I've been here, beating off the metre high club thread which came second iirc.

That sentence is like something from a Carry On film ]

That's typically inane. Bin Laden was an active terrorist leader, plotting to kill innocent people. Thatcher on the other hand was an old lady with no power at all, out of power since 1990. Parties in 1990 I could understand, now, not so much.

It was stated on Sky that recalling MPs for the riots cost around £47,000 or thereabouts (under £50k anyway) in terms of what could be claimed for if MPs were abroad. I assume those in the UK couldn't claim anything?

So, £2m sounds a bit suspect.

I think the Guide Bridge, disabled passenger prevented from travelling, thread surpassed that.

Haha, I still remember that! Apparently I am related to the guard involved, or at least that's what the bloke would have you believe after I lampooned his story and pointed out he was full of it. I can't remember which thread was full of more drivel - the one on here or the one on Digital Spy!

Someone pointed out in relation to that and the cost of the Funeral - £10 Million ??? the rebate she achieved from The EU has been worth £75 Billion to the UK so far.

Mind you I think it was William Hague :p

I've always said that the Mirror is the worst paper for printing drivel, despite the reputations (often deserved) of the Daily Express and the Mail.

Still, I'm not sure why Parliament was recalled - totally unnecessary however much it cost.

Metre High Club - was that of a similar nature to it's airborne "Mile" version ?

In my opinion for political points. It traps those who don't wish to attend as being disrespectful of her personally. I'm sure someone disagrees with me though,

A very similar nature

Ahem, that would be my Metre High Club thread :)

That was certainly a lot more fun TBH.
