The one really big advantage that S stock has over both C and D stock is the extra length.

Apart from that, I prefer all of the old ones. For me the A stock in particular delivered a vastly superior travel experience compared to S stock.

S Stock really isn't that much longer than D Stock.

I went on a D stock train today departing Westminster at 23:27 going Westbound to Richmond. I didnt manage to get the unit numbers but its nice to travel on them while they are still in service.

Really? I didn't like the ride quality whatsoever on A stock. To say I was glad to see it go is an understatement. I wasn't super keen on S stock on my first ever trip, as it was rather busy, but after that I like them.

Agreed on that.

I don't understand the fuss over A stock. They are noisy, rattly, and S stock offer a much better ride imo. I get the nostalgia felt by some, but apart from that, S stock is very much superior than A stock as I see it.

Another D stock encounter on my way back from work today as Thameslink was again a shambles. Seem to run into them at really random times lately.

Absolutely agree. Even with the C stock - which I'm on record as saying are my personal 'favourite' stock - it's easy to tell that their time was up. The S stock provide so many new innovations and an improved customer experience for all, and beyond nostalgia I'm not sure that anyone can argue for their predecessors.

Regarding the D stock, there's 10 units left of which only a handful seem to be appearing daily on a variety of workings. Not much pattern to their use now, largely just as required to cover for unavailable S stock whilst the ATC fitment takes place in Derby.

Not really the last week there have certainly been more D stock than normal so much so i ended up with 2 D stocks for both my trains one duty last week.

Also T067 which has been a S stock for months has been a D stock the last few nights and T042 which again has been a S stock for months has been a D stock.

so all of them have been out the last week i would say.

I've got to admit to being glad others agree that S stock is superior to A stock! It is to C stock too, which is my favourite stock like bluegoblin7, and as much as I would like a ride on C stock again for the memories, I much prefer the S stock!

I prefer driving the 1st gen ECEB stocks with Westcode to any of the other stocks, beit conventional or 2nd/3rd gen ECEB with 'smart valve' braking.

The braking control on stock the likes of D78 and 73TS seems to feel a lot more positive when you put an application on, even though they have the rate valves to limit jerk on them, the jerk limits seem much more stringent on the likes of 2009TS and S Stock, makes it feel less confident in your hand.

I hate, hate, hate the C Stock deep to my guts: Slow, uncomfortable and extremely ugly with its graffiti. D Stock were way more cooler with improved suspension and a nicer interior, fit out with warm green grabpoles and nice seats.

I'm mixed on the A Stock. Very ugly train, but also very comfy and warm, with a nice motor. Never been on the S stock, but they have AC, so that's good.

I was at Acton around 12.30 on Saturday when one went through the eastbound District platform slowly without stopping. It was out-of-service. Took photo but too blurry!

I saw a D Stock train today while going to the shops (pic below, blurry i know lol). There can't be many left on the line, every day I walk past the bridge where they run and I see them less and less.

It's sad to see something disappear like this, it's a very protracted loss :( Looking at pictures of the unrefurbished D trains on wikipedia gave me a profound nostalgia, I grieved for my childhood. Knowing they are now going completely is upsetting.

They are elegant and it's so nice to sit in the saloon-style seat facing in the direction of travel, brushing knees with strangers in the compartments. They r gentle and reassuringly rectangular.

The S rolling stock is clearly more efficient in every imaginable way and I am begining to warm to them, but I feel it's a reluctant reconciliation. They could have at least painted the handlebars green??? and included some saloon-ish seating as they've done on the Metropolitan Line. I think sometimes efficiency can compromise the pleasure of travel.

Part of me hopes the refurbishment by Vivarail will be minimal just so I can feel the D78 aura for a few more years when I visit Leeds. But I know there is already a lot of North/South politics tied up in this and they will probably be looking to refurbish drastically to avoid the highlighting Britain's inadequate investment in local rail networks in the north of England. What do people think? Perhaps the question is academic, given they will be on a different route with regional branding.

For now there is a narrow joy in sighting the remaining cars. But we are lucky to still catch glimpses in 2017 :)

Managed to get a ride on one yesterday all the way from Ealing Broadway home to Whitechapel yesterday around 3pm which was great. In fact there were 2 D Stock departures in a row from Ealing Broadway to Upminster so a very pleasant surprise
