Good result on Saturday for The Owls, beating Brighton with a fairly average performance. We went ahead early on, they got a man sent off for a vicious assault and got a second from the resulting free kick. It almost felt as if we were holding on at 2-0 and a man up but our defence has been fantastic recently and even though Brighton pulled one back, the 3rd goal came a minute after.

We've played far better and not won, swings and roundabouts I suppose. I'm not worried about relegation at all, looking up and hopefully we'll finish top 14.

That could be famous lat words my friend. Everyone around us seems to be winning, its not over till the fat lady sings.

But a really good string of results and Dave Jones seems to have steadied the ship and full credit to the SWFC board for sticking with manager, we are the only team that has been in bottom 6 for a long period and not sacked manager and our form is now one of the best in the league.

An investigation has revealed a Champions League match played in England was involved in the current and rather large Pan-European match fixing scandal.

To this day, I'll always be suspicious of Wayne Rooney and that incident (about the time when I believe his dad was accused of being involved with some betting fraud?) where he did something totally bizarre to get sent off for absolutely no logical reason at all.

Can't remember the game but it was what saw him out of the Euros in the qualifiers. It really did make me think something dodgy was going on even though I'd expect such scams would be a little more discrete!

An investigation has revealed a Champions League match played in England was involved in the current and rather large Pan-European match fixing scandal. They won't say which match it was but that it happened within the last 3-4 years.

It was stated that the match in question cannot be disclosed on account of the current investigations that are taking place. This, of course, will be "manna from heaven" for all those who specialise in conspiracy theories...<(<(

Both the FA and UEFA have made statements that they were not notified by the investigating body. Will it now be automatically assumed that this was because they too were under suspicion.... by the "conspiracy theory" specialists?...

When i first saw this Man Utd beating Roma 7-1 instantly sprung to mind. Firstly because it was an anomaly score, and secondly Italian opposition, which when combined always triggers suspicion. United lost the first leg 2-1 then went onto win at Old Trafford 7-1. but I think that was longer ago than the 3-4 years it says in the article.

That match was played on 10th April 2007...nearly six years ago.

Why do many people assume that it was the British side who would have been involved. Do people believe that the foreign team would not be under suspicion.

I think I know which incident your on about....

After his father was invistigated (or convicted, I can't remember), a joke went around where Rooney was apologising in advance for getting sent off in that night's game in the 27th minute. He then got sent off in the 27th minute of the second half .....

Anyway, moving on to more mundane matters, It's a big week for Scunthorpe United coming up. Home games against Portsmouth (our game in hand), Crawley and Carlisle in the next week. 5 points minimum is a must if we want to have a decent shot at avoiding relegation to League 2.

However, only 1 home win all season does not bode well ....

Of course not - but there will undoubtedly be a lot of folk thinking of "dirty cheating foreigners". I do not believe that the British teams should in any way be considered above suspicion either.

thanks for confirming the date Paul.
Personally I don't believe for one moment a British team would be responsible. As its only 1 game played in England will almost certainly be a visiting team.
I would almost go as far as being certain Italian teams are heavily involved, they always seem to be at the centre of these scandals!

Although on the 10th there were a few results including that 7-1 win by Manchester United against Roma! Which was the only game played in England on that day according to wikipedia!)

The games played on that day and i can already predict that people would be blaming Man Utd for Match fixing already! (but it does seem suspicious with that score - and i do remember the match :) )

Manchester United 7 -1 Roma
Valencia 1 - 2 Chelsea

edit - although Liverpool seem to be apparently one of them! (note this is not my opinion just found it on the horrible newspaper that is very anti railways...)

As much as id like to see man utd done for such an offfense, with the above united would be clear. Match fixing nearly always sees the fixers being on the losing side. It is far easier to fix a loss than a win.

Another disgraceful scene occoured in stoppage time during last night's League 2 match between Gillingham and Wycombe Wanderers when the Chairboys keeper Jordan Archer was 'attacked' by a fan. To be fair he was pushed to the ground by the supporter as he was time wasting and got booked just seconds beforehand. Stewards and police were quickly on the scene and have arrested him.

If the courts have any consistency I expect the supporter to serve a few weeks in jail, just like the Leeds fan did in October

I haven't, I merely said that I was suspicious at the time of this incident. It can't have been the game mentioned anyway, but it could still be another incident as yet not investigated or revealed.

Or it might have just been Rooney being a total t**t.

On 2011, nine people including the father of Wayne Rooney and the Motherwell midfielder Steve Jennings were arrested on suspicion to defraud. Merseyside Police said at the time that these nine arrests were the culmination of a joint operation with the Gambling Commission.

On 23rd April 2012, the solicitor acting for the father of Wayne Rooney confirmed that Merseyside Police had informed him that no further action was being taken against him in this particular matter.

Given the reputation of the police these days, we'll probably find out one day that the police received tips in return for dropping the charges. :)

Who knows! Stranger things have happened! Money can corrupt just about anyone, but you probably did notice my smiley and the fact that I wasn't making a real accusation.

I am quite happy to just wait and see what comes out, and I'm sure there will be at least a few high profile figures that will surprise us, or not as the case may be.

Alex McLeish departs Nottingham Forest after 40 days, probably the Board there couldn't take to his 'Total Football' philosophy ;)
Scott 'skoosh' Brown given the Captains armband for Scotland by WGS, all the best Broony! (also Celtic skipper)

McLeish will be lucky to get a job in The Scottish 3rd Division (whoops Rangers ) the rate he is going through Clubs.

Well, a good start for Scunthorpe United, with a 2-1 home win over Portsmouth on Tuesday night.

isnt it odd how this incident hasn't resulted in the nationwide condemnation of wycombe fans, 24 hr coverage on sky sports news, pundits and ex players having a classic soundbite and many members of this forum telling us how much they dislike Wycombe and have done for years.

"leeds united, a lower class of player assault"

Something to do with it being the Wycombe goalkeeper that was assaulted by a Gillingham fan?

I know it's been a bad decade for Leeds United but do you really think they have fallen so far as to only be given as much media attention as Gillingham and Wycombe? It's a much higher profile club so obviously it's going to get more press (good and bad).

One of the laws regards violent conduct towards people outside of the players on the pitch. That's why the Chelsea player got sent off for kicking the ball boy the other week. I presume a trip is only worthy of a yellow card, where-as a push or punch would have seen a red card?

Silly rule that needs a common sense overhaul. I expect the yellow will be rescinded.

Do not adjust your sets. England have beaten Brazil for only the fourth time ever.
England 2 Brazil 1. Joe Hart saved a Ronaldinho penalty, Rooney and Lampard for England. Fred for Brazil.

I hadn't even noticed there was a huge round of completely and utterly pointless international friendlies this evening. In football that actually matters, Nigeria and Burkina Faso (whose match v. Ghana has featured one of the worst referees I've ever seen) have made Sunday's African Cup of Nations Final.

Good result - but is it as meaningless as the victory over World and European Champions Spain last year?

Lampard again....why is that idiot Rafa not extending his contract :p
