If you're worried about a drugs and alcohol test, then...

The impression, if one asks a question concerning how much does the test cost, is that one wishes to pay for the test in order to see what the results are on an 'unofficial' basis before taking the test for real as one step in applying for a position with a TOC.

There is enough information on these excellent forums about becoming part of the rail industry to realise that it is all part and parcel of an integrated process. 'Forum Search: medical' should do the trick.

I think you have inferred something that is completely not there.

OK, fair do's. I consider myself admonished and will back right off forthwith.

Apologies, honest, to the OP. I find it difficult to post anywhere on the internet without, just a hint of, cynicism and tongue firmly in cheek.

Why wouldn't someone in your mind just take their chances on the free test they'd get if they successfully got through the process? What would they gain from paying to find out something they already knew? :|

You've also ignored that the OP asked about PTS courses too.

I imagine the OP is looking to get a P-Way job, either with NR or a contractor. Getting into these can be a bit difference to getting into an operational role with a TOC.

Hi all and thanks for replies, the reason I am asking the questions is that some PTS track workers are required near me, but they wont take anyone on without a PTS which i dont have.

Maybe he is a cable thief but wants to be safe doing it?

I was thinking of nicking a loco actually

Now, don't go crashing it into an apartment block! Just a nice gentle joyride please.

Could well be but I don't work for Network Rail so I'm sure some learned colleagues will confirm soon! Did they tell you much about the test? I suspect they may want to test your communication skills, although I may be WAY off the mark!

Suggestion then is to speak clearly and slowly, requesting the caller to repeat information if you do not hear it clearly and relay the information back to confirm understanding. Communication is massively important in safety critical roles!

I'm sure someone will be along soon to correct me if I'm wrong, but in the meantime, GOOD LUCK!

Do network rail track workers get money for digs if working away from home ?

Network Rail look after their staff and mostley TBH are depot/area based so you will 99% never stay away with p-way/maintenance. you will work in a suitable radius of travel from your depot unless you are part off a specialist team ( i.e butt-welders,etc ) then your radius of work will be slightly bigger but usually they prefer to have you "work in your own patch" .

this is different with subcontactors however... generally a pat on the back a road map and off you go:P

Passed my PTS today so I will start contacting agencies now to see what comes up.
