It's definitely not an easy one to define. You can bet it'll be an Irish Rail crew working it in to Connolly in the evening and back out in the morning, and statistically half the carriages in the rake should be owned by Irish Rail, and most of the time so will the loco.

But then if we're counting Eurostar sets at Landy and Forest I guess it's a similar situation!

Your NIR list covers all of the (surprisingly many) traincrew depots they have so it sounds be pretty close to accurate I would have thought.

Plus, when the 321's/322's were around, one of these units would only be diagrammed for peak usage, so would end it's morning duties with a Leeds to Bradford working (which IIRC, called only at Shipley) and would then spend the day occupying a platform at Forster Square until being needed for the afternoon rush. Don't know if this arrangement still applies.

When I used Forster Square back in December, there was a 333 on p3. I recall as we had to walk passed it to get to the train we were after. Our visit would have been around 3pm, so it is quite possible the arrangement still stands

Other places i can think of where units are stabled that aren't depots (or at least, have no maintenance facilities) would be Harrogate, Lancaster (i believe Northern stable the Morecambe branch unit there?), Huddersfield and, i think, Scarborough.

Not sure about Scarborough now. Northern no longer have a unit there and I think the last TP’s in are both Nova sets which go to the new TMD

Indeed I'm a shunter at Littlehamton and Bognor, we fit the following

3 - 12 car (normally we use PLT 3 for our 3 berthed 313 services
4 - 4 car (this is used also for a single 313 berth)

SDG 1 - 20 car
SDG 2 - 15 car (we rarely to 15 mostly 12)
SDG 3 - 15 car (we rarely to 15 mostly 12) + CET

There's a 3xxxxxx something or other on the far bay at Hertford North for some reason.
Are the sidings on the other side - Platform 3 side - ever used?

Where do trains go at night?

It sounds obvious - the depot, but I read that Longsight can take a maximum of fifteen 390s overnight. Now I know that there is a depot in Wembley and Glasgow, etc. But fifteen? It is the main depot for the Pendolinos and there are fifty six? So... where do all the other ones go?

If a depot as large as Longsight can only take fifteen Pendolinos, where are all the Eurostars kept overnight? Can Temple Mills take all seventeen 374s and the 373s at the same time? And Great Western Railway has over a hundred IETs split between North Pole, Maliphant, Stoke Gifford and I think some stay at Laira. If they can only take fifteen too, that accounts for only sixty or seventy IETs? LNER has all of the Azumas and the 225s as well over Bounds Green, Doncaster, Neville Hill and Craigentinny?

Unless of course, it means fifteen IN the actual shed, and more can sit on the sidings outside the depot? But if not... where do they all go?? Unless Longsight is just... small? Although Craigentinny can handle 176 vehicles... and that's only what, nineteen Azumas?

I'm confused. How many trains actually sit at the depot (inside and outside of it), and how many trains can stay overnight at places like North Pole and Bounds Green?

Please can someone clarify, because I'm surprised at how much less depots can take compared to what I thought. I don't mean how many can they do maintenance on, just... how many can stay there overnight? There doesn't seem to be enough room for them all if they can only take 15-20 trains...

I think it may have been mentioned or implied, but some late night trains only arrive at a depot or stabling point just as an early morning ECS leaves to travel to the station where it will form its first booked service. Hence in normal times, this reduces the amount of storage needed slightly.

Also typically at certain stations near(-ish) to the depots, trains terminate after their last booked service. And then wait until space is available in the depot. Then one by one they get taken to the depot.

Often within a couple of hours of the first trains entering the depot, trains that have been serviced, would start coming off the depot and then travel to the station where they were due to enter passenger service. But would often arrive quite a long time before their first scheduled passenger service.

This again is due to the lack of capacity in the depot.

Back when Class 43 125 HSTs were the mainstay of the Bristol to London Paddington services, just refuelling typically took just under an hour per set. So the ‘fuel’ road would be in constant use while the depot crews were active and there was stock to service.

Oh, and not all sets are in traffic all through the day. In some depots some work takes place during the day.

A “255 Castle Class” 2+4 HST recently got itself covered in graffiti while stabled at Exeter Riverside New Yard. It was so bad it GWR ran it ECS to Bristol SPM to be cleaned.

During the summer, the stock for the special steam hauled trains to Devon (I can't remember the names!) is often stabled in one of the middle roads of Bristol Temple Meads. Later in the evening, I've noticed that there's often a couple of Class 800s in the platform roads further away from the entrance for a while, although whether they stay there overnight or are waiting to go somewhere else, I don't know.
That’s very common during a normal summer and occasionally at other times of the year on the Middle siding line (between the Up Through line and the platform 5/6 line. The locos (steam and/or diesel) detach and go to Bristol Barton Hill depot overnight or all week if the special only runs at the weekend.

As well as the Motorail/platform 2, the fish dock line (which is next to the Motorail/platform 2 line) at Bristol Temple Meads is sometimes used. Also sometimes the High Level (D.M.U.) siding (next to platform 1) is used. Not necessarily planned or regularly, but occasionally platform 1, platform 13 or one of the other platforms ends up with a train left for hours during the night (but maybe not all night).

In the normal timetable, two 717s stable overnight at Hertford North Up Sidings, and that's essentially it.

Covid has complicated things, there's some 365s stored there at the moment (I think this is what you're referring to), and there's also a morning ECS which runs from Letchworth CS to Peterborough reversing via Hertford North Up Sidings, and a corresponding return in the evening.

The down siding hasn't been used since May 2018. I can't recall it having been used for stabling, however various timetables did put trains in and out of there during the weekday midday period. I think this was essentially to accommodate freight paths, as the timetable as it was required to use two platforms at Hertford to reverse the Moorgate service, and using platform 2 for terminating services would have blocked the down line.

Think London Overground use Crystal Palace, not sure about West Croydon.
Of course, there are other places that can be used but aren't. Purley Platform 6, Epsom Downs, I think Sutton Platform 4
There's also Oxted Bay for diesels that's used sometimes. East Grinstead, Uckfield are also used to berth stock
And Gospel Oak they stable a unit on P3 that's normally the first one out the next day.

The southern facing bay platforms at Crewe are used to stable trains overnight, & there's a EMU stabling siding just to the north of Crewe which the Manchester stopper uses during the day between journeys rather than waiting on P1.

Feltham (SWR) depot, marked ‘future’ on the list, has been in use for a few months now, albeit it not at full capacity yet. Currently, three trains are booked to come out each weekday morning, with three returning each night. I’m unsure on weekend numbers.

As the original title was where do the trains go at night, the answer for Caledonian Sleeper ought to be “in service”. ;)

I suppose Polmadie could be left for the out of service vehicles…

I would still argue that NIR don't stable anything in Dublin Connolly. Yes they jointly operate the Dublin - Belfast Enterprise service but the last train into Dublin at night and first out in the morning are crewed by Irish Rail. If that's enough to still count then by extension you have to say that Irish Rail also stable in Belfast York Road .

That’s quite correct.

It is only the IÉ crewed Enterprise set that overnights in Connolly.

Southeastern stable at Tunbridge Wells

Interesting. Would this be a Covid arrangement, as I can see it in the current TT, however doesn't seem to continue after December, with the train spending the night at Tonbridge instead?.

Can't see Camden in the list for LNWR?

Only midday stabling, as far as I can see. Quite unusual to have a location which is used during the day but not overnight.

For Chiltern, Avanti West Coast & Caledonian Sleeper, I'd distinguish between the 2 separate Wembley Depots. Chiltern use Wembley LMD, while AWC & CS use Wembley InterCity Depot.

It's the difference between the platforms (usually the bays) and the sidings that are in between the platforms, and those at the southern end of the station. Really it's called Sheffield Station Sidings for the former and Sheffield Shunt Spur/Holding Sidings for the latter.

It's one of those rare large stations where shunts are still untimed, so you can't tell where units are booked to go to and from just from RTT or similar.

You can add Huddersfield and Leeds to that list (used on Saturday night-Sunday morning). The 68/Mk5s are stabling at Scarborough, with the depot temporarily out of use.

Also depends on your definition of 'stabling' as to whether Glasgow Central should be on the list - it's only used for a set that arrives from Polmadie at 00:35 and then forms the 04:22 departure. It's all contained on one diagram.

Similarly Manchester Airport could be contained depending on your definition, one/two diagrams a day "finish" there at 00:17, before starting there the next day at 00:38 (in reality "going to bed" at York depot around 03:30).
