This doesn't mean you shouldn't show respect. Let's not turn this into a silly little argument, someone has died in very unfortunate circumstances and other people have had to witness this and deal with the consequences.

Probably shouldn't even give this the dignity of a reply. So I'll say this, RIP to the person involved, and thoughts with the passengers, traincrew, lineside staff & BTP who have to deal with this utter tragedy.

None of whom are likely to read your message.

Can we drop it please?

Well said.

No other train was involved in the incident and the victim did hit infrastructure with serious injuries. The scene on the train is nasty to say the least so I've heard, so I have the utmost sympathies of anyone who had to witness or deal with this, especially the driver who would have been first on scene after stopping.

I wouldn't be surprised if this will have an effect on how the drop-down windows on a 442 are, though this is of course incredibly rare and it's been a while since something like this has happened.

I was once on an NIR Class 80 as a student in the in the 1990s and was chewing gum. To dispose of it I decided to throw it out the sliding window at the top. I put the gum on my finger, put my finger and thumb out the window and got an almighty thwack off a branch. I learned my lesson that nothing should go out any window.

What a tragic incident. Thoughts with all involved.

A question I haven't seen posed, unless I've missed it, is what this is likely to lead to (if anything) for droplights on other stock in use on both the mainline network and heritage railways. Are regulations likely to change to forge them to be secured with bars, or will it be seen as a tragic, but rare enough incident such that it doesn't warrant such a change?

I suspect the latter. Droplight windows are on the way out anyway.

Then thankfully you do not know what you are looking at.

You wouldn't think they would have put the actual picture of the man's injuries moments before his death on a news site, wouldn't have you?

Look at the picture on the Daily Star site a little harder. There is a lot more there than I would expect any media outlet to show short of Liveleak or 4chan...

Is it the bodily fluid scattered on the side of the unit, or the object on the trolley?

An awful incident. Any hints yet if this was an enthusiast having a last bash on a 442 who knew exactly which window opened or a normal Gat Ex customer who just didn't realise how restricted our loading gauge is? On a normal 442 how many of these windows would be capable of being opened anyway?

All this speculation isn't doing anyone any favors, particularly the family of the deceased. The best thing to do right now is to wait for more details to emerge.

My condolences to the family, everyone who bore witness to this horrific incident and those involved in the clean-up process. Horrible stuff all round.

The Beeb's reporting on it too.

BBC News said:
A man killed on a train may have been leaning from a window when he suffered a blow to the head, police have said.
The man was on a Gatwick Express train at Wandsworth Common station when the incident happened at about 17:30 BST.
British Transport Police said the death was not being treated as suspicious, and dismissed reports on social media that the man had been "decapitated".
He was treated for a head injury, but was pronounced dead by an air ambulance doctor, London Ambulance Service said.
Police said the man was in his 20s and officers were working to confirm his identity and inform his next of kin.
"Our investigation remains at an early stage, but initial enquiries suggest the man may have been leaning out of a train door window when he suffered a blow to the head," they said.
Inspector James Tyrrell added: "We are aware of a number of reports on social media which say the man was decapitated as a result of this incident. However, this is not the case."
The incident has been reported to the Rail Accident Investigation Branch.
A Gatwick Express spokesman confirmed there had been an incident on board a train which was travelling from Gatwick to Victoria.

It seems the RAIB are investigating this now.

Hmmmm, it looks more like some object than human. It can't have been human as he was treated for head injury before death.

You must be on the wrong part of LiveLeak then. :|

BTP have just tweeted confirming that the person involved was not decapitated, they have also not found their identity or contacted any relatives.

Thoughts to the families and individuals involved in this.

I echo what some others have said in that this individual must have been leaning quite a way out to strike infrastructure. Unless of course there is a specifically tight clearence in this area.

Most heritage lines are limited to 25mph so incidents like this are less common and less likely to have such horrible results.

This is hardly the first time such an incident has happened so unlikely to lead to major new legislation.

We may see the droplights on the 442s deactivated though.

By the time any directive like this has been implemented, the 442s will be gone.

Wouldn't be surprised if they got deactivated overnight. It wouldn't be a hard job to do at the depot.

Used to be a regular occurrence back in the day awful as it was. In the same way if doors where not adjacent to platforms & you fell, nobody to blame but yourself. We are so wrapped up these days.

Probably, although with the amount of coverage that this incident is gathering, they can probably just use this as a deterrent.

That pretty much confirms that picture on the Daily Star is not a graphical image. Seriously, some people of the media like to build bigger bricks on words sometimes...

I'm not entirely sure what constitutes a graphical image, but bodily fluids would surely count? Certainly good journalism wouldn't include a picture of a corpse, even if covered.

Sad news, but I do wonder why the stock didn't have a lock put on those dropdowns when they went Driver only on certain routes, and when in use on other services such as London Bridge-Eastbourne the guard able to unlock to perform duties.
