Using open data sources I've been able to identify 602 "blocks" on a generic weekday as follows where block composition indicates the main service the block runs on and what the first and last journey start times are as well as any other routes the block runs onto and block number is given based on the main service and organised chronologically by first journey time...shows some quite interesting interworking! The car would certainly not take that long, it would take at most half the time of the bus
That is the upper time that Google Maps gave me when I put the route in as driving directions (this link should replicate what I had on service 3, for example. The lower driving time given was 1hr). The timetable for service 3 shows the 11:55 from Clovenstone arriving at Mayfield at 13:33, but not the distance covered. The distance was the main thing I was trying to find out from Google Maps; I just noted the travel time as well as it was convenient to write down.
There was more than that that were that frequent
Those were just examples of long routes off the top of my head.

Route 26 (Seton Sands branch): length 18 miles, time by car 2 hours 0 minutes.
I believe the Tranent branch is longer by about 1.5 Miles making it the longest by Lothian themselves. It’s a fairly short distance from Ayers Wynd to Seton Sands.

Would it not be better for buses to perform a 1-way loop on Newhouse Avenue and terminate there? The X7 can be inconsistent enough as it is due to its length and adding a 5+ minute diversion each way on top of that seems like a recipe for disaster.

I think I've heard it said the 26 is Lothian's longest city route (in terms of distance covered), with the 44 a close second. Perhaps service X7 is the longest on their wider network.

While on the Top Trumps subject does anyone know the slowest service, or the one that stops most frequently? It often feels like whichever bus I've had the misfortune of boarding.

I would agree, a fortuitous Euro 6 compliant replacement for the remaining open top tridents in unfortunate circumstances.

As far as I know, it has 405’s front, with spare/custom parts used to form the side and rear.

A quick comment on the doors open day at Marine.

Very very good, in the context of "they don't have to do any of that at all" - blessed with dry weather given that the vehicle displays were outside - there was a great mix of vehicles to explore both Lothian and privately owned preserved vehicles.

The Kids zone felt bigger this year too, so lots of effort goes into the event which has to be done alongside "the day job" of operating a sizable network so well done and thanks Lothian for continuing to run it, it's definitely popular - busy the whole time we were there!

I was super surprised to see the mass return of the Streetairs though! Definitely the gotcha of the day!

Thankfully just in the form of little facemasks they handed out for children of a smiling bus. Perhaps the 2024 on their registration plate will end up being their year of scrappage! :lol:

I was there too, helping out the owners of preserved Atlantean 659 and making sure any trouble was kept to a minimum. One family, who took it for granted that they could touch anything, left the bus with their tails firmly between their legs after I told them off.
Another 'entitled" opened the centre exit from outside. The look on his face as I immediately shut it again was a picture. :lol:

Near the end of the day, there was a nice moment when the last driver of 659 in LRT service, Andrew Shortel, came by. He drove the last LRT Leyland Atlantean journey (part route 4 from Asda to Longstone) at 7.29pm on January 3, 2000. He asked for his picture to be taken either the bus and, with the permission of the owners, I screened it to recall that final journey. 20240928_145626.jpg

For 7 year old buses they must have very low milage, so should be easy to sell for a good price!

I never attended but it was good to see a decent number of heritage vehicles turnout at the event unlike last year. Was it just the car park the exhibits or was there the usual bus wash tours etc..

No bus wash tour that I noticed? Heritage, service, training and support vehicles out front along with the police (two vans and a car + a stall) and the marines (a stall with a sharpshooter rifle and a general purpose machine gun out)

Inside was kids zone, inflatables, face painting, food, two vehicles getting custom screens put on for photos and out back was Volvo sustainability but I didn't get that far!

ZF had a stall inside too which is great to see them support it so consistently but a bit random given that most people won't understand what they do!

There were coachworks tours but those were balloted beforehand and I, pun intended, completely missed the bus on those.

I was successful in the online ballot for the coachworks tour which was my main interest in attending the day. If I hadn't been successful I probably wouldn't have gone. It was interesting to see all the old ECT/LRT buses in home territory in the city but I was killing time for a bit until my scheduled tour. I was first in line about 15 minutes ahead of time. While waiting one man and two couples approached and asked the guy in charge about the tour. Disappointed to find it was only ballot winners. I wasn't sure how many to expect given they were using 626 but there were about 20 including several children.

The first stop was a workshop attached to the side of the building. Inside was a B9 with no identification. It was in the final stages of being rubbed down for minor repairs and painting. I was near the back at that stage and couldn't hear properly but I think the main details were up to 5 days for preparation, lower half repaints were carried out every 3 years and full repaints every 6 possibly. Maybe someone with more knowledge can confirm.

We were decked out in hi-viz Lothian vests and taken inside the main building by Steven. First bus seen was 428 waiting for vinyls to be applied before returning to service. The positioning diagrams were laid out. Three tri-axles in various states of repair next with one awaiting extensive side panelling. A couple of metalworkers demonstrated the new guillotine and shaping (for want of a better word) machine to form a wheel arch complete with bends in the appropriate places. They said that the new equipment would allow them to carry out far more repairs in-house. We also saw a moulding shop for fibre glass panels if my memory is correct.

We next saw the stores and the panel spray booth with pallets set up for different garages needing particular parts. Moved on to the fabric section where Gordon (I think) was assembling seat cushions, material cut, stitched and stapled. All the materials like rolls of carpet were assembled in the different colours. He demonstrated the difference between left and right handed scissors and had a wee boy try them out on a piece of cloth. We also saw the stencils for each seat type. We were each given a small pillow like square in Lothian city material complete with a badge marking the Coachworks open day. The children were earlier each given a toy bus in Lothian colours. It looked like a Routemaster in a Corgi box but I couldn't see close enough.

Onwards to a desk where vinyls were laid out for new BZLs and Steven confirmed the remaining 39 were coming soon. Then around the back of 453 with its damaged rear panels lying on the floor and repair almost completed. 233 in City Sightseeing livery partially stripped of logos. We were shown the tartan design that is due to be applied. A quick twenty minutes later the tour was over and we were back on 626 for the short trip back to Marine.

Having taken a 15 from the city centre down to the garage I was pleased to see a 45 taking passengers on board and jumped on for the return journey.

I enjoyed the couple of hours there overall but the highlight and main reason for me was the behind the scenes look around the coachworks. For me, as much as seeing new buses on the streets, it is the operational side of the company that appeals. Having had a trip through the bus wash at Central a number of years ago I would now be really interested in seeing the Control room. Maybe next year?

Glad you enjoyed it.

I believe the control room is in the process of being refurbed so next year will be interesting if they go back to central as I’d like to see the finished product!

I wonder what the chances are of any of them making public appearances again in the next few years, potentially at an open day?

Its a bit pointless having them with them never being out. Do they still have the full fleet?
