Just google verbal and numerical reasoning tests, there's loads online. The ones on the link are just the same as any others, I presume that SHL are just whom Network Rail are using for the assessment.

Got some random questions... what was the group exercise? about how many people were there? Were many people wearing a tie? I can't decide if I should wear one or just an open collar! Cheers.

Rightio, promised to report back to you lot and well here we go.

I went in shoes black trousers, belt, open colar shirt. as did other people, also others wore suits, or ties without the jacket, it was pretty even on the different stuff people wore, so you may decide what you would like to wear. (i saw two people in jeans and trainers and just thought "did you not read the email").

ok, first you start of with a presentation for about an hour, i knew most of the stuff he was saying because i researched a hell of alot lol.

Theres about 100+ people there, you get split into groups and do seperate things, My group probably had the best schedule as our tests were in the morning from 10 untill 12, so if you get a morning test schedule lucky you because by afternoon if you travelled far and woke up early, you start to feel it.

The tests i was really worried about these before:
Technical comp was my first exam, pretty easy read the question, read the paragraph text too find the answer done.

Mechanical comp was my second test, I struggled with this test personally, but i found from asking around from different people that they would find other exams harder, so its different for different people really

Fault finding third test, very easy for me as i revised this and knew how to do it, but if you dont know they explain it briefly and most people understood it but i could see some people with there faces going pale :P.

Numerical reasoning, The final test and the test i was dreading the most!. IT WAS EASY! lol the ones that you find on the internet are much harder the shl one is much harder and even though there using shl this test was so easy.

The only problem is with all these tests is the time given, very short and they say 99% of people never finish the questions so dont worry if you dont, its all about accuracy.

group exercise, very fun! great time you mix with ur group have a competition very good laugh, you get assessed by 4 people but once you start you completely forget they are there, basicly what you have to do is build squares, rectangles and circle segments and put it together but theres a catch which they will explain (to do with the colours).

Then i had a final presentation, answer your questions (we asked loadssss lol).

Then i had admin which is your passports and all that stuff once thats all done a quick colour blindness test then your good to go :D.

overall very organised day i had a laugh met a great bunch of people was worth the early morning and experience.

oh and the food, not bad ;) nice sandwichs, wraps, mini baquettes, crisps, chocolate, drinks, snacky foods really. make sure you get in the queue quickly coz its a long wait if your at the back and the foods gone :P

feel free to ask me questions

When you arrive the you are put in to groups and through out the day that's the people you are with .The group exercise you are split in half and you are given lego blocks and you have to create. A square,a segment of a circle or rectangle each shape is worth a points.
On average there was about 130 people but they did say we have the biggest group
Some people wore suit and ties others wore a. Shirt and un did the top button it just. Depends how u feel comfortable .
A word of advice wen your doing the test you are not going to complete the test the average person gets half way so don't panic. So just make u focus. On gettin the 1 u done correct.
The hardest tests are fault finding and mechanical but that only matters really if ur doing e&p, signalling and maybe tele any way good luck o btw u do a colour vision test its not hard unless your colour blind.

I'd say A. B and C are the same anyway, just inverted.

A only has the strength of the bars in two planes, B and C have it in 3. B has the diagonal effectively supporting from the lower hinge up so would put more strain on the lower hinge, and C vice versa, so logically, I would assume C to be strongest.

Which gate is stronger? A, B or C?

The answer to this question is actually B. Any weight put on the gate towards the right will be distributed down the supporting pole.

I grabbed this question from LOROL train driver practice papers. Even a qualified driver i showed it to got it wrong.

The rest of the questions are not really difficult at all. If you have some experience with Lego or Mecanno im sure you'll do fine.

Can you give me some advice on the kind of questions asked in the mechanical and fault finding tests as this can be quite a wide subject.
Thanks

Hi

Congrats on getting through to the assessment stage. If you give me your email i can pass on a number and email address of someone who might be able to help.

If you havent picked a new email address yet i'd highly recommend gmail as a email provider.

Will.

Hi,

Email address is [email protected].

I've tried emailing the woman who sent me the original confirmation email but had no reponse and the enquiries help line that I called couldn't help me. I'm getting a little panicked now as I really don't want to miss out just because I can't access my email!

Any help massively appreciated.

Thanks.

Here's a part of the email telling you what you need to take,

You MUST bring the following items with you to the selection day:

1. Your Passport (plus 2 photocopies).
2. 2 passport size photographs (of you only).
3. Your original exam certificates (plus 2 photocopies).

We only require copies of the following certificates: GCSE Grades A-C (or Scottish Standards grades 1-3) in Maths, English and Science (or Engineering or Resistant Materials), plus one other subject at grade A-C or 1-3. We accept Key Skills Level 2 in Maths (Numeracy/Problem Solving) and English (Communication) as equivalents to GCSE (or Scottish Standards) in Maths and English. We accept NVQ, BTec and City and Guilds in practical subjects, such as engineering, mechanics, construction, plumbing and bricklaying as an equivalent to GCSE (or Scottish Standard) Science.

If you do not have your certificates please contact your school/college and/or examining boards as soon as possible.

If you DO NOT have a passport please bring the original and photocopy of BOTH of the following items:

A FULL Birth Certificate (plus 2 photocopies) and Proof of National Insurance Number i.e. P60/P45 or Payslip or National Insurance card (plus 2 photocopies)

There is also a smart dress code, no trainers or denim.

My assessment day is this Friday but is in Coventry, so unfortunatley I can't help with the time and place. Although my assessment day is at 0830 for a 0900 start and should finish around 1700, I presume they will all follow a similar format. Hope this is some help.

Thanks for that - just realised I've written Croydon as my assessment centre - mine's Coventry as well. I'm pretty sure it's at the Westwood centre Network Rail have there but if you could confirm that would sort me.

Thanks again for passing on the email!
