A drop in the ocean.

No amount of gnashing on here is going to make Poundland loose sleep; if anything, wibbling about it on a Railforum is a totally inefficient waste of time. If the laws mean so much to you, deal with it privately.

I sympathise with you, I really do, but what do you want people on here to do about it?

It's called a discussion. This forum is 'General Discussion'. If this particular thread doesn't interest you then you can go away and do something else, I don't think many here will miss your contribution based judging by your postings so far.

Quite a good song that, actually.

I may be wrong, but you've got the attitude of someone who works at Poundland and is slightly miffed that I'm portraying the store in a less than perfect light

In response to your point about making Poundland "loose sleep" I suggest you get to know me a bit better. I am a nightmare and no-one sleeps after they meet me <D

I'm not expecting anyone to "do" anything. I shared my experience (and acknowledged I had poor judgement at times) and received useful advice and anecdotes from members of the forum, alongside the obligatory and rather repetitive "it's only £1" comments every now and again.

By that logic I wouldn't use my railcard for a £3 journey because "it's only £1"!

OK, but as someone pointed out it's a discussion and that cuts both ways; I'm entitled to view my disdain at someone who is clearly overreacting and demonstrating a perfect example of our perverse 'entitlement' culture.

Every time I fill up the car, I think the station overcharges me, but I don't march inn there, blurt out my rights, and demand the surplus back.

Oh grow up!

Nothing to do with 'perverse entitlement culture', I'm exercising my rights under the law. Your petrol analogy is irrelevant.

Go troll elsewhere.

That reaction is proof you're oblivious to how disproportionate your reaction was to the reality of that fact:

That it is only £1.

Would I have done the same in your situation? No. I would have simply binned the earphones and forgot about them. But that doesn't mean I'd expect everyone to do the same :)

I personally only ever go into pound shops for the chocolate raisins and the toffifee. So far I've not had to return any ;)

Would anybody else care to point out that a £1 pair of headphones cost £1? I hadn't realised!

The problem that I can see with Poundland's staff is that (in my area at least), they seem to have a deal going on with the local Job Centre, where by Poundland will offer 4 week work placements to people who have been on Jobseekers Allowance for a long period of time.
A friend of mine was placed on one of these, and from what I have been told was given about 10 mins of training on company policy, and then thrown to the lions [customers], and told to help them when they asked.
I also gather that at the particular store that my friend was working at, the vast majority of the staff were on these 4 week (un-paid) placements.
The combination of, very little training + Some staff really not wanting to be there, just going through the motions doing the bare minimum to satisfy their work coach, is a recipie for poor customer service in my book.

It always baffles me why someone would want to join a discussion simply to take the moral high ground? As stated, this is a general discussion forum and a member has taken the time out to document his experience with Poundland. He has every right to do so as does anyone else who wants to to contribute to the discussion. To simply say 'it's only a pound, get over it' does not contribute to the discussion in any way. Perhaps explaining why you wouldn't bother arguing over a pound would be more helpful.
I have read with interest JakeF's stand off with the national junk selling chain and congratulate him for pushing what is clearly a point of principle and not a financial argument. Large companies consistently take the micky out of consumers and have been getting away with it for donkeys years.
If you don't like the discussion, don't get involved with it! :-x

Wasn't there a recent one where a young lady was forced onto one of these unpaid placements when she was doing important charity work at the time?

If your post had any validity at all, then 99% of posts on here is a waste of time, including yours here, as apparently "what do you want us to do about it"?

Yeah, there's nothing anyone can do, but it's here for us to discuss and share experiences, and I've personally learnt things from postings.

Fair play to the OP for fighting it though, I don't think I could of had the patience to bother, knowing what the staff are like, and then subsequently to stand their ground when faced with pure ignorance.

I'm just bemused as to why the OP involved so many people in a dispute over faulty £1 headphones. I would've just let it lie and moved on. I mean, it's not as if catching a train is any more expensive now is it?

Just because it "only" costs £1, does not mean that the consumer should not expect it to work for a reasonable period of time after purchase.

Accidents happen. Besides, caveat emptor springs to mind here.

£2 is just £1 more than £1, so why bother about £2 if £1 is not worth bothering over?
£3 is just £1 more than £2, so why bother about £3 if £2 is not worth bothering over?
£4 is just £1 more than £3, so why bother about £4 if £3 is not worth bothering over?

Maybe the store manager should have bought the OP a new pair of headphones himself? After all, "it is only £1."

Maybe the store manager should refund him personally then.

Next time I'm in Poundland and spot a mop which head is slightly angled when it's supposed to be straight I'll ask the store manager for a pound

That'll make them competitive! Giving free money away.

I'm sorry, and I hope this doesn't fall foul of any forum rules, but you are talking absolute crap now.

There is a distinct difference between paying £1 for a product then asking for a replacement when it breaks, and demanding money because items instore are broken. And giving away free money? I'm not even going to comment.

You either haven't got a grasp of the discussion at hand, or you are choosing to be annoying by coming up with dense statements. One or the other and I don't know which. Mods feel free to edit post if it's in breach of any rules.

As an aside, I bought some bicycle inner tubes from there once. They were mostly good, but a couple of them went down because the valve cores weren't screwed in tight enough.
But the funniest part of the visit was the students in front of me in the queue, who were asked for ID because of the sex toy they wanted to buy.

Wait what? Poundland sell bicycle inner tubes and sex toys?
