The Settle to Carlisle line has been closed this evening between Kirkby Stephen and Carlisle after Network Rail deemed the line unsafe after a landslip last month and continuing rain has caused further issues. At the moment the line isn't due to reopen until 29th February.

That photo is from 2000 so no steam isn't being used on ballast trains.

I'm not sure how to read into NRE site. We know there will be SLW until the end of the month but it could be interpreted to mean that there will be safety checks and could conclude that the end of the month refers to the SLW.

Doh. Oh well that explains it. But what was going on in 2000 that let a freight train hauled (propelled) by steam occur ?.

From Gordon Edgar's flicker page which has a similar photo https://www.flickr.com/photos/12a_kingmoor_klickr/8446634311 Tuesday 19th December 2000

"Railtrack chartered LMS Stanier-designed Heavy Freight 8F 2-8-0 No. 48151 from Carnforth, which took a train of 20 hoppers from Hellifield to Ribblehead for loading, then forwarded them to Carlisle in appalling weather. This trip was to mark the reopening of the Settle to Carlisle railway line after a major refurbishment."

Network Rail LNW state that the line will remain closed for the foreseeable future due to the extent of the landslip.

From the photos I've seen, the line appears to be slipping into the River Eden - not good.

This will be very problematic if Appleby's cut off for the whole month . Do trains have the ability to turn around there? There's the junction for the old Warcop line but I don't know whether it's still used.

Should be okay, there is a reverse cross-over just north of the station platforms and it is adjacent to the manned signal-box, so if they want to run trains up to there and reverse them, it shouldn't be an issue.

Would certainly be quicker for passengers than having to take a coach the whole way, particularly as the Settle to Appleby leg of the railway line does not follow the main road making it a slow drive for a rail replacement bus.

Trains can still cross over at Appleby.

Emergency timetable Appleby to Leeds in force for tomorrow with an 05:00 ecs move from Skipton to Appleby for the first southbound.

the news and star as up to date as ever then....
They've got the right line, pictured a relevant type of engineers train and also referenced an event in recent history that adds some local colour...what more do you want? ;)

According to NRE Website, it is hoped to run a reduced service between Carlisle to Leeds later today. SLW.

Wierd. That looks like an EWS coloured brake van. Its a colour photo so also suggests it is more recent than when steam would have been expected.

This link from the news and star features a steam loco delivering ballast...
is this a good PR photo or are we really using steam for engineering - and if so why? anyone know?

It was a one off photographic charter thingy from about 2000 - makes a good picture. brake vans aren't often used on engineering trains these days ;)

See http://www.newsandstar.co.uk/news/l...eks--c8e2ef4b-2ac5-48ea-8766-9f466b05f7f2-ds:

The Settle-Carlisle line has been closed again due to the threat of further landslips.

It is now expected to be shut for weeks.

Network Rail had partially reopened the route yesterday.

However its ground measurements have now detected further movement of a railway embankment at Eden Brow, near Appleby.

Martin Frobisher, Network Rail’s route managing director, said: “... "Since movement of the embankment was first detected by aerial monitoring, we have had a team of experts on site to monitor conditions and to measure ground movement.

"This team measured significant movement of the embankment overnight and we have needed to close the line.

"Major repairs are needed and the line is likely to be shut for many weeks while these take place.”

Network Rail Press Release says it will be shut "for many weeks".

Looking at the pictures and videos they've released I suspect that might be an understatement!

Well, it seems that NR have been doing their best to get the line open, however circumstances are conspiring against them.
