Did he just sing It's more than teenage wastelands instead of It's [Bonly[/B] teenage wastelands? Sacre blue :p

I'd rather they picked Won't get fooled again so I could make a series of bad one-liners putting my sunglasses on halfway through each one <D

It got better later on I thought.

I don't know about anyone else, but I'm sad the Olympics are over (having been to two events, including last night's athletics extravaganza :D). I'm fired up for the Paralympics though; I might even go, if I can get a ticket. I'm away for most it though.

Eric Idle made the closing Ceremony for me :D

Chris

Agreed! They should have had him as the last act, he brought the house down.

Although I must say I'm glad we got to see John Lennon, and Del and Rodney's cameo was good as well.

Now, I'll put in the best words said by any analyst.

"Thank you, and goodnight."

I thought the closing ceremony was quite good.

Agree with the comments about Queen - where was John Deacon.....May and Taylor but no sign of JD:idea:

It would have been an idea to have David Bowie there in person singing "Heroes" - probably unavailable.

From a perspective of Medals this was the greatest ever GB performance - forget 1908 lots of the events only had British entrants. Just look at Germany and France down on 10 or 11 Golds

John Deacon left Queen permanently around 2002; Taylor and May are the only full-time members now. TBF it's not like Deacon ever really did anything anyway (and yes, I am being serious!), no vocals or many writing credits, and no Queen bass tab is mind-blowing.

Ok, so I'm an old grump. But:
  • most of the music chosen was distinctly second rate;
  • not a single performer (well, perhaps Eric Idle) performed well
  • the overall "show" was confused, and lacked any sort of structure

OK, so the golden oldies are just that, but, if they can't sing any more, don't make them; if the younger performers can't sing or move, pick someone who can. For heaven's sake, this was meant to be a celebration of hundreds of young people who had just given us two weeks of superb efforts. The least the entertainment industry could do was give a professional performance (I'm looking at you, Mr Gallacher)

Many of the oldies did sing well, many of the young ones did too. Some didn't but its the songs that are known throughout the world that was the point.

And most of all music has no facts, your opinion is that the songs were second rate, a lot of people will disagree. It is all opinion.

I'm inclined to agree. It said a lot that most of our modern musicians were performing covers of older, classic songs. It's not my taste in music but if our modern artists are famous at least give them to right to do their own songs. Madame Edith from 'Allo 'Allo would be a better singer than One Direction

It was a massive oversight to miss out (heavy) metal, we gave it to the world yet it was entirely absent (and the ghost of Dio will slay you if you call Muse or the Who metal ;))

Given the producer's CV (http://kimgavin.com/biog.html) I was actually surprised at how good much of the music was - even if there was nothing heavy there.

Sadly Metal and most types of rock are normally ignored by the media unless something bad happens.

Bands such as Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Judias Preist shaped a lot for music that is now out.

From the Closing Ceremony Eric Idle & The Who where the best though.

All in the end a massive congrats to Team GB and to all the other countries as well.

I would like to extend my thanks to Butts for having the foresight to set up this particular thread upon the General Discussion forum in March of this year. It certainly has provided a good "talking-shop" for forum members.

I've thoroughly enjoyed watching the Olympics and I find I'm flicking through TV channels wondering what to watch now. Even at work there's that lack of whole office discussion.

Looking forward to the Water Polo Championships!

yes, and yet our county town doesn't have one

Me and a few others at work (Melksham) aren't really bothered about it all, it's been on the TV in the colleague room though, wasn't too fussed about it though funnily enough I wouldn't mind having a go round the BMX track!

Really?

Obviously you don't give up that easily - along with various other people who are keen on them - which then actively annoys those who aren't that bothered.

Well its been a long time in coming, as i decided to not look back at this thread.
However, I said 'I give up' to a different quote to the one i then answered.
So yes, I really did give up.
As for not being allowed to answer questions posed by people. Well.
Someone is asking questions, I answer, and I get accused of keeping on.
Whats the point.

Anyway, hope all you nae sayers enjoyed the Olympics.
As for Lord Coe ramming it down everybodies throats. I suppose you all missed the bit where he admitted 50% wont be interested in it.

Thankyou Lord Coe, you did us proud. Now to ignore the nae sayers.

First part of the show was boring, with music that was average at best. What the hell were One Direction doing there? All they are good for is splitting up marriages. Waterloo Sunset was murdered as well.
Only really good bit was the set, and the lighting.

Liked the bit with the athletes filling the stadium, but could have been slightly better. Instead of playing 'Our House' for the 2nd time, they should have played 'We are the Champions'.
The massive concert improved things, and the layout of the stage was good in the shape of the flag. But some of the music was awful. Spice Girls should never have been there. They were worse than normal, and I always thought that was impossible. Not to sure on Russell Brand either. An average at best comedian.
It definitely picked up towards the end though.

My pleasure - I'm sure someone else would have started it had I not.

I'm only pleased the event itself was such a success and team GB did so well.

I thoroughly enjoyed the Olympics thank you, including standing around in my natty pink top giving people advice. Sadly didn't manage to get any tickets for it but I do have some for the Paralympics.

I'm impressed with all our athletes.

I still have my reservations about the way it was done, the cost and how well we'd have done if a bit more of that near £9bn had gone into the sports in the run up to the Olympics.

And it appears the transport infrastructure held up well throughout too so congrats to everyone who worked on keeping things running.

Just a shame they cant do it the rest of the year

Well I waited to see if any comment would be made about the Paralympics or a new thread started.

The media is actually full of coverage with nearly as much space devoted to it as the standard event.

Am I alone in having no interest in it whatsoever ? - should I feel guilty ?

It's all a bit "southern league" to my way of thinking - not the physical abilities of the competitors but the standard of competition.

It's all a bit tokenistic :p

My excuse is that I've been away on holiday, but since returning (and having seen bits and bobs while in Sweden, Switzerland and Germany) it's on the TV in the living room. Thing is, I'm working upstairs and really can't say that I've been that bothered.

I do get the medal counts sent to my 2012 app, and can see we're doing pretty well. I think I'd have felt differently had I got tickets to go and see some events live. Clearly form how packed the trains were going to/from London, it will have been a huge success regardless of how many people actively watch from home.

I think they've been brilliant! They continue the excitement of the Olympics. I've been watching on TV, plus I've been to two events: the cycling in the Velodrome last Friday (where I had a great view of Jody Cundy's blow up), and the athletics at the Olympic Stadium last Saturday (where I got to see the legends that are Oscar Pistorius break a Record, and the "Irish Usain Bolt" Jason Smyth). It was a sell out, apparently - 80 thousand people. I'd already been to two Oympics events. I've also got the Closing Ceremony book on Sunday.

I probably would have tried for more if I hadn't been on holiday this week.

If you like sport I don't see how you can fail to get excited about it.

I'm not sure what that means?
