Virgin have announced a Liverpool-London flash sale. The announcement on twitter proudly boasts of 'up to 75% off' so I had a look.

As a railcard holder (which they won't let me use and I'm going to attempt to claim some 'fob off' RTVs for) it saves me a massive 20 PENCE each way... and you have to board/alight at Lime Street-Runcorn is far more convenient.

As a non railcard owner my sympathy for you is rather limited. :p:D

Just had a quick search through this thread and it didn't seem this was mentioned before (if it has, apologies). For anyone who is attending an event with tickets/passes purchased from The Ticket Factory, which is generally events at the Birmingham NEC, ICC and Genting Arena, you can get 25% off of Virgin Trains advances for travel to these venues by using the following link:

https://www.virgintrains.co.uk/theticketfactory

This discount applies to both standard and first class advances, but only for journeys wholly on Virgin Trains services. The only other thing to note is that you will need to show your event ticket/pass along with your train tickets if asked by on-board staff/RPIs.

Put this in your diary:

Visit this page on 2nd November and sign up for a (randomised) free discount code of either 10%, 25% or 50% off CrossCountry advances.

Apparently it's their birthday. Or something.

Unfortunately, railcard discount does not apply.

Up for grabs are:
1000 x 50% off codes
9000 x 25% off codes
10000 x 10% off codes

Also, most importantly, it is only valid on Standard class tickets. :(
1st class is the only way to make a voyager almost bearable!

So if you already have a railcard it will probably not be worth signing up unless you fancy your chances at getting a 50% off code rather than using one of the 10/25% codes which won't get used

Bear in mind the window of usage for travel is 3 Nov and 14 Dec 2017 so the cheapest tiers might have already gone.

Suppose you could get 20 of your mates to sign up; you'd have a good chance of getting a 50% code that way

This will help with my planned jaunt to Bristol/Exeter at the end of November, particularly if I can snaffle a 50%er. Alarm set!

Subscribers to Cumbria Life, Bay Living, Dumfries and Galloway Life and Taste Magazine can get 25pc discount on off peak advance fares on Virgin’s west coast route for 12 months.

The terms and conditions on Virgin's website say:
"Tickets are available for booking at www.virgintrains.com/cumbria-life from 31 March 2017 until 29 March 2018"

Presumably that's wrong and it's been extended for another year.

The winter offer for Dales railcard holders:

£9 for a Settle-Carlisle line day ranger (£4.50 kids)
£7.00 (£3.50) on the Bentham line.

Valid from yesterday until 23rd March. On any train apart from the 05:50 from Carlisle (the website says the 05:56, presumably they mean the 05:50)
Not valid on the first four weekends in December, and between 10th - 18th February.

I note on the Virgin Red there is currently a "one-time" 30% discount code available for those members who have linked their Virgin WC account up for advance tickets. Needless to say it isn't available to railcard holders so is pretty worthless for those holding railcards.

Wow, that is good. It's the first year I've had a Dales railcard !

That said, it mentions that the special rover isn't available to Metrocard holders. Does this mean that the winter offer is over for ordinary metrocard holders ? If so, its a sad indictment of the state of WYMetro, particularly after the discontinuation of the timetable.

Three different sets of details used for the XC birthday today, fingers crossed one of them brings me 50% off tomorrow! Even 10% off will help I suppose.

Agreed.

If anybody wants a 30% discount on VT send me a PM.

Edit: Taken

I assume clicking that button on the app will give a discount code allowing the person to do the transaction using the comfort of a laptop rather than being forced to go via the app (like previous discount codes have been on Virgin Red)?

I've just had it confirmed that the WY Metrocard offer should be coming back next week, so it's still there - just arriving a bit later.

Metro still need to bring back the WYorkshire pocket timetable though.

If anyone wants to get a code for the 25% off XC Advances at Cross Country, PM me! You have to book by 6 November and travel by 14 December. Only one code so first come, first served!

Got a 50% code :D

I've also got 4 codes for 25% discount on XC up for grabs, dates as stated by cuccir above.

Send me a private message (Conversation) if you want one.

I got a 25% off code, just thinking up possible ideas how to use it (seeing as my first option was a trip to Manchester however for the date I had selected most of the cheaper tiers have already gone so it is cheaper going via London even with the 25% off XC)

Has anyone been able to use the Crosscountry discount code?

The website says:
"To activate your 50% discount, simply enter your journey details in the panel above. Before you see available trains and fares you'll be asked to enter your unique discount code which was sent to you in your recent e-mail from us."

But it doesn't ask me for my discount code, so it shows me the undiscounted prices.

You'd only need to sell one vital organ to afford it as well!

I ended up with two 10% codes and a 25% one, so in all likelihood will have one of the former going should anybody require it.

EDIT: Seems the website won't accept any of the three codes I've got :(

EDIT 2: Works now, you have to go via a special birthday link...

I received an email saying :

In November we're turning 10 years old and, to celebrate in style, we're giving away a massive 20,000 discount codes of either 10%, 25% or 50% off CrossCountry Advance train tickets. Discounts are limited so you'll need to register for your chance of grabbing one before they're all gone. Put Thursday 2 November in your diary now and celebrate with us!

I received a paltry 10%. Has anyone received 50%?

Thanks.

Yeah, I got 50%.

It hasn't gone as well as XC would've hoped, with their Facebook posts full of irate customers who didn't bother to read the small print or can't be bothered to use the link provided in the email.

Facebook (click)

One numpty seems to be under the impression that Trainline are still cheaper...
