Do GWR ever recruit externally for trainee drivers out of exeter? Been looking for years and unless I have dropped the ball I have never seen it happen also the same for weymouth with south west trains? are there any FOC's or TOC's which seek trainees in the south west?
It has happened at Weymouth but it’s very unusual (maybe twice since privatisation, externally at least). There’s a job for a depot driver at Salisbury at the moment if that’s of any interest

There is also a very small Driver’s depot at Holyhead for Virgin Trains West Coast.
I would be very surprised if that is true - it's been rumoured for years but no agreement has ever been made about it, and as recently as 2 weeks ago I had one of their Manchester drivers passing that way to work the night shift. They've not advertised externally for it and it'be amazed if they could find 15 drivers willing to transfer internally out there!

Sorry, I’ve been talking complete garbage .

There’s a small guards depot at Holyhead not drivers. Liverpool and Manchester Drivers sign Holyhead.

No worries mate :)
Happens to the best of us, down my way there was no guard available for a train at one of the stations I signalled at the time; and I asked the controller “why can’t they send a Northam guard?” (For the reason why this is daft, see the list of depots)
Still haven’t finished that slice of humble pie....

Between the parallel lines
Caledonian Sleeper.

... Edinburgh to Ft William (they occasionally cover Dalmuir shortages) and Inverness to Aberdeen for diversions.

Dalmuir guards, all they sign is Ft William to Edinburgh including Westerton-cowlairs and the E and G, Qst Low level and the shotts line. Also the Airdrie - Bathgate line.

I seem to recall that when Scotrail ran the Sleepers, there may have been crew changes at somewhere like Rannoch, with a guard returning back to FW/Mallaig from there. Am I making this up or did this / does this happen?

Yes, Qst Guards and Drivers changed there with Ft William Guards and Drivers.

I would very much doubt it, the Bridgwater and a Berkeley jobs are covered by Crewe, with the Wentloog job covered by Daventry.

They have advertised for it before....(which is the only reason I know it exists)

Hmmm, must be a very quiet depot then with only occasional work west or otherwise of Bristol..

Anyone know where LNWR guards sign from Crewe depot? I believe as far as MKC on the trent, and Liverpool and Birmingham, but do they do MKC via Coventry?

GWR -
Conductors only at Par; Gloucester; Redhill; Westbury; Weymouth & Fratton
Train Managers only at Paddington; Swansea; Cardiff Central; Worcester & Plymouth
Both grades at Reading; Bristol Temple Meads; Exeter St Davids & Penzance

GWR has a weird Guards depot at Gloucester, they have Conductors and Train Managers operating over two links listed as Gloucester West. However with more and more Conductors signing IET's and Paddington I'm not sure what is going to happen there!

Crewe sign Liverpool, MKC via Trent, Weedon and Northampton. They also sign to New Street via Wolverhampton.

New Street union reps wouldn’t allow Crewe to sign via Coventry in fear of working being taken off them.

When Crewe first opened they also signed Preston and routes for East Midlands Trains to Derby as originally it was a Central Trains depot.

Gloucester most defiantly have guards who claim train manager grade and pay - only about 12 if not many more.

Can anyone confirm the situation at Gloucester? Why do the conductors sign HST traction, do they operate HSS and if so how does it work? Thanks.

Why? Becuase they do. How does it work? Like any other depot that has mixed traction

When the West Conductor harmonisation which can wasn’t actually harmonisation took place a number of depots Worcester, Reading and Gloucester gained “HSS” work ie HST work.

At Worcester and Reading (former LTV/Thames Trains Depots) guards were given an option to remain Senior Conductors with the wage and terms or convert to Train Manager with the terms and wage.

Glcouester was given some HST work as the driver side was given some - drivers remaining on West pay not HSS.

Gloucester has or had (I left 2 years ago) a link of 8 or 10 train managers who worked both HST and units, often in the same diagram.

Worcester and Reading worked HST/180/Turbo sets.

Gloucester train managers are on HSS TM salary and terms, West conductors wishing to work HSTs need to apply for vacancies when they come up.

Thank you. Reason I asked was it’s my local station so I was curious.
