Only timed an hour Reading to Bristol?! That's quick! (Even if it took just over an hour in reality)

There was a FGW blue class 166 in Temple Meads Saturday evening at around 17:50 complete with First Class markings on the exterior, at least at the Bedminster end of the train. Didn't see the other end.

Having the turbos down is great - especially sitting in the declassified first class (also why I like the SWR trains being loaned to GWR)

While from a selfish point of view it is great, I think GWR should make it clearer that those areas are for standard class use, because at least in my experience people are very unsure and will generally go sit or stand in the "standard class" area. Hopefully that will get better as people realise though.

Will be a while until its service but at least its now allocated to SPM. Been told 119 will need a C4 and the Ride Height Modifications, as well as the ASDO door mods. Plus 165s are internally different from the 166s for staff.

So if the 1st 165 is now allocated to PM does this mean that at last more 166s are allocated to PM - if so which?
I know that for some time only 2 were reallocated to PM although many more have been working out of PM - but still allcated to RG!
Thank you

The only 166s seen in use at Reading this week are 201, 218 & 221. 217 was mentioned as having gone to Long Marston. I believe all of the other 17 166s are at Bristol although 211 is probably still undergoing C4/RHM. As for how many of the remaining 16 are actually in service I wouldn't know.

As time goes, yes. Eventually all 166s will be allocated to PM before 165s start service probably. It's all part of the GWR modernisation with IETs and Electrostars taking places of Turbos on the Cotswolds and Berks & Hants. As this processes, more Turbos will be available to leave Reading.

Does this not depend on the 769s working the Gatwicks?

No, the 3-car 165s now work the majority of North Downs trains.

I dont know what Turbos you think are still to be replaced on the Cotswold Line, but on the days when GWR manage to get the right number of drivers available for what's meant to be operating (today not being one of them, with mass cancellation of services on the line), the only remaining Turbo weekday duties are the morning halts train running Oxford-Worcester-Oxford-Didcot, the 07.50 from London to Moreton-in-Marsh/Great Malvern, the 09.50 Moreton to London and the 10.59 from Great Malvern to London. Everything else is an 800 or HST. There are a couple of Turbo jobs on Saturdays and Sundays but that's about it.

The bulk of remaining Turbo duties in the Thames Valley are accounted for by the North Downs Line, Newbury/Bedwyn and Banbury-Oxford-Didcot (with a few extending to/from Reading).

165119 is still allocated to RG (well on paper at least, it is still showing on the RG depot allocations on Intergrale).

The 166s still allocated to RG are:

166201
166207 (currently at SPM)
166211 (currently at SPM)
166217 (currently at Long Marston)
166218
166221

I noted down 166217 on the 11:10 yesterday from Weston-S-M to Bristol Parkway? Or did I misread?

It is gauging Platforms 1 to 4 at Exeter St Davids, allegedly Platforms 5 and 6 already cleared, so there is probably some substance in the posts that they have been that way before.

No it won't be the furthest west one has gone - one of the first 165s built got as far as Plymouth - with the stepping boards removed for a test on Hemerdon Bank in - I think - 1992 to see if it could get up the gradient from a standing start with just one engine working.

:o Don't leave us in suspense! Could it make it up in such condition??
