Makes me wonder what they will find under some of the old tracks and platforms, some old victoriana etc. They have done some serious digging out. I spoke to a man there the other day (he was an enthusiast) and told me quite a few interesting facts.

I am told that the slope from the subway to the Manchester bound side does not conform to current regulations and will be extended, coming on to the platform somewhere about where the demolished cafe stood

I don't think it does meet current regulations, but the plan according to the NR website is to install lifts, rather than modify the ramp. I suspect this is better considering to access arrangements, building of new platforms and general availability of space.

The lifts are an addition and may not always be serviceable/functioning for a variety of reasons, so a reduced slope from/to the subway must be built.

As a wheelchair user, I'm pretty sure, this subway ramp doesn't conform to current regulalions. It's jolly steep;)! It's certainly not pushable unaided:).

As an aside, I noticed yesterday, TPE guards announcing that alternative arrangements were being made, for the forthcoming 9 day shutdown at Stalybridge. It starts this Saturday (27th October), for those of you not familiar with the area.

A typical commuter-belt part of north-west England
Are they replacing the railway bridge? I'm just guessing?

I understood it was bridge repair works, from what my friend from Tameside MBC tells me, and has two dates of work scheduling (29-30 October and 31 October to 1 November)

Following this, there will be two-way traffic signalling on Rassbottom Street between the hours of 0930-1530 on 5-9 November inclusive to allow further works on the bridge.

Are they taking the signalbox out of use this time: Or will that happen when the line is electrified?

The diagrams from newtwork rail make it look like the through lines will be littered with pointwork and actually make it slower? or is it just simplistic diagrams?

I think the diagram doesn't do the scheme justice. The cross-over at the east end is already in, but I am of the opinion that they will have to slew the main lines south a bit to get the connection from the Ashton-under-Lyne line to the new Platform 5 in, and I'm guessing they are also realigning the west-bound line at the east end due to the amount of platform they have chipped away!

Overall, speed limits will be increased from 40mph to 50

There is a later diagram on the NR Website to the one on the table38.co.uk/stalybridge.htm photo log. The track has been modified and it looks to show longer platforms to the ones originally shown by NR.

I do agree that the diagram (even the later one) shows the track work as being some what complicated but I think this is misleading.

What is not clear to me from both the earlier and later diagrams is if the modified bay (now to be platform 2) and the new bi directional platform 3 will be accessible to and from the Ashton direction as well as Guide Bridge. I assume it must but the arrows on the diagrams leave an element of doubt

I seem to recall that the bay on the buffet bar side would be Ashton only and the other bay would be able to use both lines.

Yes, the Ashton line can access all the platforms, the new platform 5 as mentioned will be Ashton line only though.

Thanks. That's what I thought. I take it therefore that all platforms, except 5,can be access from the Guide bridge direction.

Interpreting what The Planner said, as there are no other lines immediately to the west of Stalybridge station I believe that is correct.

Regarding the closure of Rassbottom Street, Tameside Council's website states:

Rassbottom Street – there will be two way temporary signals in place from 5 November to 9 November from 9.30am - 3.30pm whilst bridge repair works are undertaken.
Rassbottom Street – will be closed 29 and 30 October from 15.00 to 15.00, and the 31 October to 1 November from 03.00 to 03.00

I understand that only the works involving temporary lights from 5 - 9 November are for bridge works. The total closures on 29/30/31 October/ 1 November are for a large crane to be in situ on Rassbottom Street to lift large station/track construction sections from road vehicles, direct on to the station site.

Cool, I was hoping we were getting a crane! Hopefully I'll be able to get down to take some pics.

I did notice on Friday a new signal gantry at the east end of the station had suddenly appeared and there are new signals at the west end and what I assume is going to be a banner repeater on (current) Platform 1, plus some mystery grey poles.

I've uploaded the pictures I took on Friday to http://table38.co.uk/stalybridge.htm

One of the mystery grey poles. I'd have assumed they were for coach stop boards except there's a perfectly good lamp post next to it, or maybe that's gettiong ripped out!

Unfortunately none of the new photos are showing on either

In the early 1990's we got a job from Immingham To Stalybridge Atchem sidings.
This job was one of the best on the British Rail.
We worked into Atchem Sidings, by going on the goods line, past the SB, and down onto the Guide Bridge route. The whole train went a train length past a sub on the ground, and propelled into the sidings with the guard proceeding the movement.
I just wondered if this siding has been truncated or can it still be used to service Atchem.

That post looks like it is going to be very good at blocking the platform.
Isn't there meant to be a clear dimension from the edge on Platforms?

To be honest, the new whatever-it-is below isn't exactly "out of the way" either!

Maybe it's a gallows to make a public example of persistent fare dogers :) (Although I suspect it's something much more dull and functional such as a banner repeater)
