I see the 'look him in the eyes' advert iconically sits more towards the government than just members of the general public.
Before the current lockdown, the government:
- Weren't generally testing arrivals at UK airports
- Weren't enforcing quarantine of people arriving at airports, except from a small number of countries
- Left it too late to shut schools and colleges, meaning kids became super spreaders
- Still didn't supply adequate PPE to hospitals (reported on the news several times)
- Acted weeks too late when implementing new policies/rules when the hospital admissions were already escalating
I'd argue that the government have been negligent at the very least. It's all well and good blaming the public for the rise in cases (yes, that may be partly true) but even if everyone followed every rule, I doubt it'd make a significant difference if the government weren't doing 'all they could' to keep everyone safe, by actioning the points above at an earlier time.
Mental health related services also seem to have taken a back seat, when surely these services are needed most at the moment. I think the nation will start seeing mental health issues begin to rise soon, if lockdowns continue and sufficient professional support isn't in place. There's more to life than staying at home and working, and many have been doing that now for the best part of a year.
People shouldn't feel guilt tripped by leaving the house to nip out for essentials/well needed reasons because of these adverts, when the government think is fine to go to work and be in the vicinity of colleagues and customers from outside of your household. I've changed my job recently - and before, it was deemed acceptable for me to speak face to face with 150 students, but obviously not fine to go for a weekend break with 3 friends. There's no consistency.
