Yeah, that's the one near Brampton. I agree that it does make for quite eerie watching, as you say.

I certainly don't think ghosts exist, so "spooky" doesn't really fit the feel of that footage for me, but there is something poignant and tragic about it.

EDIT: I've just found a second film, which is out-takes from the main one which would have been used in cinemas at the time:

I believe it is Naworth level crossing that is supposedly haunted, I watched a series on Youtube (think it was called Haunted Britain) and it featured in there, with a couple of accounts from people who'd experienced strange goings on there. Think it's on Youtube still but its in so many parts I don't have time to find the right one at the mo. Certainly looks a bit of a lonely, creepy place on Google streetview as seen here, wouldn't like to be there alone at night.

Look on YouTube for Extreme Ghost Stories. Naworth is in parts 13 and 14 out of 20.

Looks like quite a nice little crossing cottage to me.

There's a ghostly Class 142 which appears from thin air if you move closer to the barriers in Streetview :D

Well, those things scare most people half to death

I've been back through this thread reading some of the great stories recently - really enjoyable, and glad to see it's still going.

My grandfather lives in a house in the woods close to Claxby and Ussleby so interesting to hear about the haunting reports there. I find the wood he lives close to quite spooky at the best of times, coupled with the sound of trains rattling through at night - I'd not want to live out there, it's a strange and isolated place rather like Naworth.

No ghosts at Naworth when I passed this morning, still looked grim though, even in broad daylight! (Even if most was bloked by the wood surrounding it.) I certainly wouldn't go there by choice.

I heard a story that Wellington ticket office and bridge have a ghost.

Two men walking from the car park next to the Wolverhampton bound platform arrived for the first train of the day, the passenger of the car walked on ahead over the bridge to the ticket office, as he was walking across the bridge he saw an old man in uniform standing against the handrail smoking, he called out chilly this morning.

In the ticket office his friend arrived, the booking office guy said your the first two people who i have seen this morning, the passenger turns and says what about the chap on the bridge in uniform having a smoke. It was at this point the driver of the car who had also walked over from the car park, and the guy in the booking office asked what man?

A porter was killed at the station the 1800's and his ghost lives in the old station.

Just got my hands on a copy of Railway Ghosts & Phatoms by W.B. Herbert. I'll post any good ones that haven't already been posted.

My girlfriend once saw a figure of my grandad on the staircase of the house the first time she came here, she had no prior knowledge of what he looked like as she hadn't seen any photos of him, yet described him perfectly.

He had died two years before her and me even met.

More worrying is that she seems to feel watched whenever she is in my house to the point I have gone into my bedroom before from having a cigarette outside to find her goosebump covered, crying and shaking saying a black figure was stood in the room with her. It took me ages to calm her down and even longer to get her to turn around and come downstairs. We have heard doors banging, lights coming on and off, footsteps, shrieks, things like car keys will vanish and reappear somewhere else, whispers and crying, temperature drops and even had a hand print appear on a window that had not long been cleaned. She has seen a figure in my bedroom doorway at night which i worrying. There is also an oppresive atmosphere about the place, like a big cloud is having over the house, its most unpleasant.

But it only happens when she is there, when I'm home alone its a quiet and comfy as a mouse. We contacted a medium (rather she did and then told me) who explained some entity in the house (whatever that may be) is clearly extremely unhappy with her presence there and is very very keen to show that. Since then she has come over a few times and it gets progressively worse the longer she is there. It doesn't affect us relationship wise (if that is the intent of it) but freaks her out, and me if I am honest.

Without wanting to sound stupid, what's meant to be wrong with that pic? The lighting on the laptop I'm on isn't great so I can't immediately tell :)

And I'm fully aware of the story about 47299/47216 and still don't see anything unusual about the photo.
Is the photo supposed to be of the loco working the duty shortly before it's collision at Wrawby Junction? The consist looks to be right. I don't see the significance of Claxby signalbox though, as the accident involved Wrawby Junction 'box.

Would anyone like to tell the story to those of us who don't know it?
Wikipedia should do for this one:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wrawby_Junction_rail_crash

The Wrawby Junction rail crash was a train crash which occurred on 9 December 1983, at Wrawby Junction, near Barnetby station in North Lincolnshire, England.

It happened when a freight train collided at low speed with the side of a local passenger train. The first carriage of the passenger train was derailed and turned over onto its side, and one passenger was killed instantly. In the subsequent inquiry, the accident was deemed to have been caused by a signalman failing to secure a set of points that he had operated manually after an equipment failure.

The incident was later given a stranger twist by the claim that the locomotive involved had been re-numbered in order to prevent a psychic's premonition that a locomotive numbered 47216 would be involved in a fatal accident. The freight train locomotive, No. 47299, had been renumbered from its previous designation of 47216 two years earlier, causing some confusion in rail enthusiast circles, as locomotives were only usually renumbered when some major mechanical alteration had been made to them, which was not the case. A British Rail source described the issue as "an amazing coincidence".

Looking at the photo again I'd say it was taken a few years after the collision as the loco has a high density headlight (fitted from about 1985 onwards) and appears to have a flush front end (possible replacement cab following the collision).
I still don't see anything unusual about the photo.

That's a good point, well spotted. Having looked up the photo on Flickr, it turns out it was taken in 1988, I have read in the past that 47299/47216 was particularly accident-prone and was involved in a number of mishaps (It surprises me that it appears to have been rostered so often for petroleum duties, something a little less combustible might have been more appropriate!), so I thought that this might excuse the flush front end that was often received following accident damage, but I failed to consider the high intensity headlight.

I'd have a think about moving if I were you! Being stalked by a deceased Grandparent would kill the mood rather I imagine?! Eek :o

The ghost of a track worker killed whilst on duty haunts the former signal box cottage at Whitrope in Scotland.

I have heard many stories of traincrew seeing the ghosts of dead highlanders on the lineside between Culloden and Moy assumed killed in the battle of Culloden

According to some books, a medium made a stark warning about an accident involving this certain class and where it would happen.....however i read this in Herberts railway ghosts and phantoms book, and by rights he wasn't well known for being all together truthful.
