Major chaos out there today due to various problems. East Coast/Grand Central/Hull Trains seem to be particularly badly affected. Several Leeds services have been cancelled because of the weather and overhead line problems south of Peterborough have worsened the problems. Meanwhile, trains between Hull and Selby are suspended due a train striking a vehicle on a level crossing. Hull Trains are being diverted via Goole. Scotland doesn't seem to be faring well either!

Just got home from a three hour abortive attempt to get to work.

The very cheerful conductor on the TPE service announced they were suspending restrictions on Advance tickets today, so may be worth checking with your TOC if you're due to travel on one today.

GC Website states:
Tuesday 05th January 2010

Due to the adverse weather conditions, Grand Central are extending outward and single ticket validities up to 7 days from the advertised date on the ticket issued.

All train services using the East Coast Main Line are experencing delays of up to an hour due to congestion caused by Network Rail overhead line damage south of Peterborough.

I saw on the East Coast website earlier a London>Newcastle service running 181 minutes late, to be terminated at Peterborough.

Would imagine as driver had been up front around 4 hours at peterborough he may have refused to go further. Going foward when delay is expected to get worse with the conditions would have taken him well over 5 hours continuous driving by Doncaster. BBC said EC have decided to pull the plug on Newcastle terminators to concentrate on an hourly albeit delayed KGX-EDB service.

Though we haven't had as much snow in the Midlands as elsewhere (yet), I've got to say, I'm amazed by how well services running through Birmingham New Street are doing! We've had a good few inches of snow now and the vast majority of trains are running on time. This morning when we got the first big downfall here I was in New Street and there were virtually no delays then either!

Still very luck here in East Anglia. Apart from the odd train fault & short formations, everything is running very well. I do gather though that this could well be the lull before the storm. 5am start tommorow should be fun!!

Natioanl Rail website is struggling with the load. West Anglia line was poor yesterday- the over-running engineering works in the morning; then a jumper at Harlow Mill in the afternoon- whilst I gave up pretty early and went for a bus, a colleague (who's less proactive) was stood at Whittlesford awaiting a Cambridge train for well over an hour. No announcements in that time- either automated or using the remote announcement facility. No facilities- the station building is only open during the morning, and the only enclosed shelter is on the southbound platform. Not fun. Nor was having to pay for a very slow bus, but at least that was warm in a way the station platform wasn't.

Apart from the ECML and the NR website, considering there is complete meltdown on the roads with all buses suspended in Liverpool and most in Manchester, many of the trains are running on time in the NW and generally.

First Capital Connect is running a emergency timetable tomorrow on the 6th Jan 2010 on the Great Northern route, I'm sure Mackenzie Blu or Westcoaster can give a update on the Thameslink route.
And as always, all information can be found off the website @ www.firstcapitalconnect.co.uk

Snow Plan in place and full crew working it is then!

I for one am not expecting to be able to get in, as I live high up on the North Downs!
Get your skis on then. ;)

What a lot of passengers don't (or can't) accept in weather like this is that railway staff don't live on the premises, and therefore one of the reasons for running a special timetable is to try and run a core service. But if enough crews can't get into work nothing will run.

Weather reports are quoting up to 40cm of snow South of Birmninham to London and spreading into Kent and Surrey, the SR will be at a gridlock tomorrow due to the conductor rails, it will be a black day for rail travel, we already have 5" in North Wales and it is still coming down

Saw an absolute tonne of Virgin services delayed due to Crew Members not being able to get in. LM are doing well, as are the majority of services out of New Street though :)

according to the thing passengers wait on its only the gn running a revised timetable:roll:, but im sure if we have the same snowfall as we did in february then the tl side will go one of two ways either a half hourly bedford-brighton all shacks, no loop services, or bedford - st pancras all station every 30 mains and london bridge- brighton every 30 mins and again the loop no service.

the only thing i do not like about driving in the snow is snow blindness/bleaching, especially when you go into a tunnel

Posted on NEEA's website...

National Express East Anglia said:
We have been advised that snow is likely to fall across many parts of the East Anglia network tomorrow, Wednesday 6 January. Some of this is likely to be heavy so in anticipation of this, and to provide you with the best possible levels of service, National Express East Anglia is planning to operate a revised timetable throughout the day.

Train services will be streamlined with the following services not running:

Liverpool Street to Stansted Airport at 05:40 / 06:10 / 06:40 / 07:10 / 07:40 / 08:10 / 08:40 / 09:10

Stansted Airport to Liverpool Street at 06:30 / 07:00 / 07:30 / 08:00 / 08:30 / 09:00

Norwich to Liverpool Street at 06:25 and 06:55

EVENING PEAK CANCELLATIONS

Liverpool Street to Stansted Airport at 15:40 / 16:10 / 16:40 / 17:10 / 17:40 / 18:10 / 18:40 / 19:10

Stansted Airport to Liverpool Street at 16:00 / 16:30 / 17:00 / 17:30 / 18:00 / 18:30 / 19:00

Liverpool Street to Norwich at 17:50 and 18:20

OFF PEAK

Ths Stansted Express service will continue to operate a half-hourly service during off peak hours.

Customers traveliing to / from Lowestoft and Peterborough to Liverpool Street are advised that these services will only operate between Ipswich and Lowestoft / Peterborough throughout the day.

Other short-notice service alterations and cancellations may occur.

Please allow additional time for your journey and take extra care when travelling.

NXEA's area is basically the one part of the country that's currently forecast to be relatively unaffected- especially the GEML route. Is their "snow timetable" just a "me too!"?

The GEML cancellations amounts to just 4 trains. It's the WA side that is cutting back.

It's not a bad idea either, as thinning out the StanEx services allows more recovery time for other trains. However, these might get rammed if Stansted continues to take planes diverted from Gatwick and elsewhere.

Just close your eyes. Train will stop by itself if you pass a red won't it? :D

I've been wondering what SET would do if the old line is affected badly by snow, but they can still run on HS1? Would they allow passengers free use of HS1 without paying the surcharge or just cancel the trains and let people claim compensation?

It makes sense to do the former, but I do get the feeling that SET want to keep the HS1 as some super-exclusive service at a premium and won't let just anybody on!
