Over the last year Avanti have added extra time and extra stops into this service

AIUI that is being undone from September.

LNER have managed to stick to the usual ticket release cycle,

Avanti have been hit more than most by planning issues though the Covid period. I’m not going to explain why here, but much of it is not of their doing. Meanwhile, LNER, alone, have a system that allows them to sell tickets ahead of times being confirmed. This system (or something like it) will be rolled out to other TOCs in due course.

The xx;10 shows around 18.5 mins of recovery/pathing/performance allowance and 23 mins dwell time for 8 stops - the lengthiest being 7.5 mins at Crewe.

According to another member - @LNW-GW Joint - this is because:

"The Glasgow is currently taking the path of the xx10 Chester/North Wales Voyager, though not its stop at Milton Keynes.
It then waits at Crewe to pick up its normal path (which would have been non-stop through Crewe, first stop Warrington).
The Crewe stop is to compensate for thinner services generally, with few Chester trains running south of Crewe, and the via Birmingham services to Glasgow being missing (the Edinburgh services generally run).
It's all due to get back to "normal" at the September timetable change."

Those aren't the normal paths - normally (non-Covid) it is xx30 Euston departure, running into the existing arrival time at Glasgow.

They could have sold tickets, but given current travel advice that would itself have attracted criticism.
What travel advice is that? There is no restriction on rail travel travel for leisure purposes.

There is a 1152 Glasgow to Euston special tomorrow , 1 stop at preston

in fact there a few extra Glasgow to Euston specials , all showing stopping Carlisle and Preston only for staffing reasons, I guess these are not record attempts as just under 5 hours, I guess extras for the match on Friday England v Scotland

This is officially on today, forming the 10:36 from Euston, with 390044 Royal Scot running the service!

Avanti West Coast and Network Rail, in association with The Railway Magazine, are teaming up today (June 17) to attempt to break the record for the fastest journey from London to Glasgow.

The intercity operator’s iconic Pendolino set No. 390044 will depart London Euston at 10.36 for a non-stop journey to Glasgow Central, aiming to beat the current record of 3 hours 52 minutes and 40 seconds.

Well, it is "bog standard" in being a regular Pendolino like all the others.

And that 'Peter somebody' as you described him was introduced as "Sir Peter Hendy, Chairman of Network Rail". He was talking to the general public, not a bunch of enthusiasts, (who would easily be able to find out that 390044 currently carries the name 'Royal Scot').

Peter Hendy of Network Rail may not have mentioned Royal Scot but if he didn't I thought I heard it mentioned at some point in that news item.

So the run does have official backing after all, and is not just an Avanti stunt.
With supporting quotes from Peter Hendy and Grant Shapps, and charity benefits, it now seems to be a means of promoting the railways as being "normal" again, as part of the recovery plan.

At this time of year the windscreen will likely be a bug-splattered mess by the time the train reaches GLC. No opportunity to nip out and give it a good scrape en-route.
Good point. Certainly as far as Willesden then

Per post #96, it's being given that name today.

Or does "officially named" simply mean that it's already called this and is being "blessed" in some official way?

I am a bit confused. RTT shows that 1R24 from Holyhead/Wrexham is booked in to platform 16 at 09:40. The next departure from that platform shows as the 1Z57 express to Glasgow at 10:36. I thought there would have been the various ECS moves noted?

"Booked" meaning that ordinarily it might use platform 16, but today it won't. 5Z57 has already arrived and so the platform is already occupied by today's special train.

EDIT 1R24 used platform 4 this morning

I think this is a pointless exercise but if they are going to do it I hope they do it well.

You are forgetting this run has been organised to raise funds for charity - Action for Children and Railway Benefit Fund -which is a positive thing.

Ah - that makes me slightly less grumpy then!

The (calendar) timing of this train is very clever. The huge demand for Glasgow to Euston services ahead of the England v Scotland football match at Wembley on Friday means all available spare 390s are being sent to Glasgow to work additional services to London. So the record attempt would have run anyway as an ECS, and the additional costs involved are marginal.

Agreed

It seems Avanti has enough money to run this service so no longer needs any taxpayer support.

They can even start to repay the millions of taxpayer support they got given over the last 15 months.

But they won't do that, the railways operate in their own bubble thinking that Covid never happened.

Screwing over the regular passengers on normal trains which will be delayed due to the pointless speed run needing a clear run, full of industry big wigs on no doubt lots of free booze

But as pointed out this would be running as an ECS anyway. And that sort of thinking means that many historic speed runs should never have happened - for fear of delaying normal travellers.

Ha! looks as if Traksy has crashed due to demand - getting connection errors

Edit - back up, train looks to be running under that obfuscated 180Q number

Also, apparently they've named the service - 'The Royal Scot' as per traditional WCML Anglo-Scottish crack express.
