You must really like looking at high plastic seat backs if you liked GWR's horrid Mk3 interior because that's most of what you could see.

Do you realise some non enthusiasts say it "luner"?

A subject done to death before but Only the High Density sets were bad, and that was done to meet passenger demand and growth. The other option FGW had was keep their HSTs low density and ignore the complaints from the Bristol and Cardiff commuters about getting a seat. The low density sets (and particularly the 425XX’s) were perfectly fine to travel in - and I enjoyed them too. The same Grammer seats seem fine in ScotRails “Inverness” 158s to little complaint.

The low density sets were nothing of the sort: still rows and rows of “tombstones” lined up, just with two extra bays of four. The internal layout was appalling.

Is there extra weight removed from all the carriages? (forgive my lack of understanding of rolling stock)

800s, 802s and one carriage on each 801 have diesel engines, which add additional weight. The 803s don't have them.

Any word on the lighting in the new LUMO? I read that they changed the colour temperature to a "warmer white". But according to Dylan's Trip Reports it's just purple tinted translucent plastic on the luggage racks and the same harsh lighting as all other Class 800s.

It seemed warmer to me. The purple tint on the luggage rack glass gave the illusion of mood lighting, made the interior feel a bit nicer in my opinion

ok. i think it's definitely possible that the lights themselves have changed from "6500K" - bright hospital white to a warmer colour, 4500K perhaps...

quite a technical question!

I definitely recall reading on here that they were going to change the lighting colour temperature. The purple is interesting, Virgin put that on their Voyagers and I think views were mixed on it. I think FirstGroup just can't resist splashing purple somewhere! :D

Virgin actually had purple lighting. The LUMO trick seems to make the plastic luggage rack tinted purple so when you look upwards the white light seem coloured, even though they aren't. Bit of a strange trick!

There are three different light settings for on-board staff to choose from, which will (slightly) adjust the brightness and temperature of the saloon lighting

Where are the electric motors located on a LUMO? underfloor in all carriages?

Underfloor in the 3 intermediate coaches. The outer driving cars are trailers.

The motored cars have four 226kW (303hp) motors, the same as the other 80x units in service.

Ah ok. So in theory coaches A and E might be slightly quieter than the others?

I suppose, but I believe they carry the transformers - so there might be "whine" from that. It's probably a negligible difference, even the bi-mode 80x vehicles with the underfloor diesel gensets are not particularly loud.

The whine from the traction motors is pleasant enough, it's that awful buzzing from one end of the centre 3 cars that really lets the AT300 fleet down. Apparently it's some sort of electrical choker that stops the trains interfering with the signalling. They will be removed when signalling on the ECML is upgraded. Because of this I think they are quieter on diesel than straight electric

The two end cars are lower floored as they don't have the engines underslung them. Wether the height difference exists on Lumos units I can't say. The easy way to spot this is look at the overhead luggage racks, the lower height floors the driver alert or panic buttons are under the racks, the higher floors the buttons are above the rack

Ok, so seems like coaches A, C, and E on LUMO should be a little quieter.

No, just the end 2, A and E nearest to the cabs is where the quietest areas can be found. One end of C will also be quieter as you will be furthest away from that and the adjacent cars chokers but you will still hear the motors. I haven't yet figured out which end tho despite signing 802s!

Downside of A and E (and all other current 80x end vehicles) is the lower floor. Not low enough for level boarding, but the windows feel annoyingly high, a bit like a 153 or similar.

If you prefer that of course then do sit there :)

Don't forget the bang from under the pantograph at the rear of the front carriage when the VCB opens and closes at neutral sections!

I was on a 397 down from Edinburgh to Manchester on Sunday, the banging really alarmed some passengers (my fiance included). Is it as loud on the Hitachi units as well? Wasn't sure if it was a CAF unit living up to its name....

I don't know about those but 350/2s are incredibly loud (but oddly not other 350s).

It’s just as loud on 80x units. It’s also just as loud on a 387.
