Upcoming from the PWI

Book now for our next seminar on April 25th at Swindon Railway Centre

Railway Junctions; the electrification challenges is our first technical seminar in the field of electrification. The seminar will cover turnout design, construction and maintenance.

Peter Dearman, Electrification Advisor to Bechtel has the following comments:

"This seminar will be of interest to anyone who wants to understand better this important aspect of OLE Engineering. The topic demonstrates the synergy and inter-dependence of the OLE and track disciplines. Speakers currently working on electrification of the Great Western and other major projects in the UK will share their knowledge and the lessons they have learned, presenting a prescient snap shot of current best practice and the pitfalls along the way. Track Engineers and OLE Engineers will benefit from the discussion and debate that the seminar will doubtless prompt.

For those in OLE Engineering there is an additional potential which I hope this seminar will start to unlock. The professional recognition of OLE Engineering skills across design and construction does not presently match the true value of those unique specialist skills. It is my hope that we can develop and nurture the role of the PWI in seminars, conferences and networking throughout the OLE community. We can then work with the PWI to put in place a proper scheme for the formal accreditation of professional standards for OLE Engineers which will be recognised throughout the rail industry. Clients, suppliers and individuals will all benefit from such a scheme.

Whatever the future holds in that regard, this turnout seminar offers a fascinating insight into an aspect of electric railway engineering which deserves and needs to be better understood. I would encourage you to share details of this event with your colleagues. I am looking forward to the day and hope to see you there"

To correct a few points: the GOBLIN now has electric freight trains running, but delays to the 710s are keeping pax workings as diesel.
Re the EGIP: Edinburgh to Glasgow QS via both Falkirks are complete, and the "SDA" (i.e. Stirling-Dunblane-Alloa) wiring is due to be finished by the end of the year. Shotts isn't due to be commissioned until March 2019 (last I heard).
